On October 7, Narendra Modi will complete 25 years in continuous public service, a milestone that includes 4,495 days as India's prime minister, making him the longest continuously-serving elected head of government in the country's history. The anniversary offers a moment to weigh not just the scale of his political ascent but the substance of the economic record he has built along the way, one that supporters credit with modernizing India and critics say has left deep structural problems unresolved.

From Chief Minister to National Force

Modi's rise began in Gujarat, where he served as chief minister before becoming the Bharatiya Janata Party's face of national politics ahead of the 2014 general election. His campaign message centered on development, efficiency and a break from what he characterized as decades of Congress-led drift. That pitch translated into two consecutive parliamentary majorities, in 2014 and 2019, an achievement no BJP leader had managed on that scale before, and a rare feat in India's fractious multi-party landscape.

His tenure has been marked by an unusually centralized style of governance, with policy announcements often made directly by the prime minister's office and amplified through mass communication campaigns. This approach has made Modi both a dominant electoral figure and a lightning rod for debate over the concentration of political power in India.

The Economic Balance Sheet

Twelve years into what commentators have dubbed "Modinomics," the results are mixed. The government has pursued an ambitious reform agenda, including the landmark introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), a major overhaul intended to unify India's fragmented state-level tax systems into a single national market. It has also pushed large-scale infrastructure spending, digital public infrastructure initiatives such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and efforts to formalize India's vast informal economy.

Supporters point to India's emergence as one of the world's fastest-growing major economies during much of Modi's tenure, along with improvements in physical infrastructure, digital payments adoption, and the ease of doing business rankings. The push toward direct benefit transfers, using bank accounts and digital identity to route welfare payments, has been cited as a genuine administrative achievement that reduced leakages in subsidy delivery.

But the record has its shortfalls. Job creation has struggled to keep pace with the number of young Indians entering the workforce each year, and private investment has at times lagged behind government expectations despite policy incentives. Demonetization in 2016, the sudden withdrawal of high-value currency notes intended to curb black money and counterfeit currency, disrupted the informal economy and is still debated over whether its long-term benefits justified the short-term shock. The rollout of GST itself, while structurally significant, faced early implementation troubles that strained small businesses.

The term often used to describe India's economic transformation over the past 12 years is "Modinomics," a label that captures both the ambition and the controversy surrounding the government's approach to growth and reform.

A Legacy Still Being Written

What sets Modi apart in India's political history is less any single policy than the durability of his political coalition. Where previous long-serving leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, governed in eras of a dominant Congress party facing weaker opposition, Modi has sustained his dominance in a much more competitive, media-saturated political environment.

As he passes the 25-year mark in public life, the assessment of his legacy remains contested along familiar lines. To supporters, he has delivered stability, global stature and a modernizing economic push after years of coalition-era paralysis. To critics, growth has been uneven, unemployment and inequality persist, and the centralization of power has come at the cost of institutional checks. Both camps agree on one point: few figures in India's post-independence history have reshaped the country's political landscape as decisively, or for as long, as Modi has.
