New data revealing that 53 students died at India's Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) between 2019 and 2024, with more than half belonging to historically marginalized caste groups, has reignited a painful debate over whether the country's most prestigious engineering institutions are failing the very students affirmative action policies were designed to uplift.

Of the 53 deaths recorded across the IIT system during the five-year period, 45 were classified as suicides. Students from Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Class (OBC) backgrounds accounted for more than 50 percent of the fatalities, a share that roughly mirrors their representation in overall student enrollment at these government-funded institutions.

While officials note the proportion aligns statistically with intake numbers, critics argue that raw parity in enrollment does not capture the lived experience of students who arrive at IITs through reservation quotas, only to face isolation, academic pressure, and alleged discrimination once inside campus gates.

A Pattern That Predates the Data

The IITs, established as engines of national technological progress in the decades after independence, have long been considered the pinnacle of merit-based achievement in India. Admission is decided by one of the world's most competitive examinations, the Joint Entrance Examination, and a seat at an IIT is widely seen as a ticket to social mobility.

But that promise has been complicated by persistent allegations that caste hierarchies, ostensibly dismantled by law, continue to operate informally within hostels, classrooms, and friend groups. India's constitution, adopted in 1950, guarantees equality before the law and abolished untouchability outright. Reservation policies for SC, ST, and OBC students were introduced specifically to correct centuries of exclusion, when so-called lower castes were barred from schools, temples, and public wells, and confined to work considered "unclean" by upper-caste society.

Historian Bipin Chandra noted in his widely used account of modern India that the struggle against caste-based discrimination could never be fully resolved under colonial rule and required the sustained commitment of a free, independent government. Figures like Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who organized the All India Depressed Classes Federation, and Mahatma Gandhi, who founded the All India Harijan Sangh in 1932, made the abolition of caste-based oppression central to the national movement precisely because they understood that legal equality alone would not dissolve social prejudice.

More than seven decades after independence, the data emerging from IIT campuses suggests that reckoning remains unfinished.

Quotas Without Belonging

Student advocacy groups and former IIT students have long described a campus culture in which reserved-category students face subtle and overt stigma, from assumptions that they are less capable to outright social exclusion in hostel life and study groups. Previous inquiries into individual suicide cases at IITs have pointed to complaints of casteist remarks, professors questioning students' right to be there, and a broader failure of institutional mechanisms meant to address grievances.

Mental health infrastructure at these institutions has also come under fire. Counseling services at many IIT campuses remain understaffed relative to student populations that number in the thousands, and students have reported reluctance to seek help due to stigma or fear that disclosing distress could affect academic standing.

The convergence of intense academic pressure, social isolation, and inadequate support systems creates conditions in which vulnerable students, particularly those already navigating caste-based stigma, may find few avenues for help before crises become fatal.

Calls for Institutional Accountability

The publication of this data has renewed demands from student unions, civil society organizations, and some parliamentarians for IITs to strengthen anti-discrimination cells, mandate sensitivity training for faculty, and expand mental health resources with staff trained to understand caste dynamics specifically, rather than applying generic counseling frameworks.

Some critics have also called for independent, time-bound investigations into each death rather than internal reviews conducted by the institutions themselves, arguing that self-investigation creates inherent conflicts of interest when an institution's reputation is at stake.

The Ministry of Education and individual IIT administrations have periodically pledged reforms following past incidents, including expanded counseling staff and revised grievance redressal committees. Whether those measures have translated into meaningful change on the ground remains contested, and the latest figures suggest that whatever safeguards exist have not been sufficient to reverse the pattern.

For a nation that has invested enormous symbolic and material capital in the IIT system as proof of meritocratic progress, the data serves as a sober reminder that dismantling caste hierarchy, a project that occupied reformers from Raja Ram Mohan Roy's Brahmo Samaj in the 19th century to Ambedkar in the 20th, remains an unfinished task even within institutions built to embody India's modern ambitions.
