The death by suicide of Sahil Wakode, a student at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, has reignited a painful national conversation about what it costs to chase the "IIT dream," India's most coveted educational credential. His death, in Mumbai, has drawn attention once again to the competitive pressures, caste and class discrimination, and cutthroat job-market anxieties that critics say define life on campuses meant to represent the pinnacle of the country's technical education.

Wakode's case is not an isolated tragedy. It is the latest in a recurring pattern of student suicides at India's Institutes of Technology, elite institutions that admit fewer than two percent of the roughly one million students who sit for the entrance examination each year. That scarcity turns admission into a defining, almost mythic achievement for Indian families, and turns campus life, for many students, into a prolonged test of endurance rather than a period of intellectual growth.

A Culture That Rewards Silence

Interviews and reporting following Wakode's death describe an institutional culture in which students have few sanctioned outlets to voice distress or acknowledge failure. The relentless emphasis on rank, grades and placement outcomes leaves little space for students who fall behind, whether academically, socially or financially, to ask for help without fear of stigma.

This is compounded, advocates say, by a job market that has grown more competitive even as the credential's prestige remains undiminished. Campus placements, once a near-guarantee of upward mobility for IIT graduates, now involve their own hierarchies of desirability among companies and roles, adding a second, quieter competition on top of the academic one that never fully ends.

Caste in the Classroom

Perhaps the most persistent and least addressed issue raised in the wake of Wakode's death is caste discrimination on campus, a problem that student groups and scholars have documented for years at IITs across the country. Students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, who gain admission through constitutionally mandated reservation policies, frequently describe being treated as less deserving by peers and, at times, faculty, regardless of their individual merit or performance.

This bias is not new to Indian higher education, nor is it unconnected to a much longer history. As the historian Bipin Chandra documented in History of Modern India, reform movements from the nineteenth century onward, the Brahmo Samaj, the Arya Samaj, the Self-Respect Movement, and figures such as B.R. Ambedkar, fought to dismantle the social and psychological architecture of caste hierarchy, recognizing that "national unity and national progress in the political, social, and economic fields could not be achieved so long as millions were deprived of their right to live with dignity and honour." Ambedkar himself, born into a scheduled caste, devoted his life to this fight and helped enshrine protections against caste discrimination into India's constitution.

Yet more than seven decades after independence, that history continues to shadow campuses like IIT Bombay. Reservation policies were designed to correct centuries of exclusion from education and opportunity, but they have also become, in the eyes of some upper-caste students and even faculty, grounds to question whether reserved-category students truly "belong." That informal, often unspoken skepticism, students and activists say, compounds the isolation already produced by academic pressure and financial strain, leaving some students facing discrimination on multiple fronts simultaneously with little institutional recourse.

A Pattern, Not an Anomaly

Wakode's death fits into a broader, troubling pattern of student suicides across India's technical education system, one that has periodically prompted parliamentary questions, internal committees and public statements of concern from institute administrations, yet has not produced the structural reform that mental health advocates and student groups have long demanded.

Critics argue that existing support systems, typically a small counseling staff serving thousands of students, are ill-equipped to address problems that are structural rather than individual. A student struggling with caste-based alienation, financial precarity, or the crushing weight of comparative failure in an environment built entirely around rank and competition cannot be adequately served by episodic counseling sessions alone, they say. What is needed, advocates contend, is a fundamental reexamination of how these institutions define and measure success, and of the informal social hierarchies that persist within them despite formal anti-discrimination policies.

From competitive exams to caste and class discrimination on campus to the race for jobs, students are given little room to speak up or fail.

What Reform Would Require

Meaningful change, according to those who have studied the issue, would likely require several things at once: robust, mandatory and well-staffed mental health infrastructure; genuine institutional accountability for caste-based harassment, including transparent reporting mechanisms and consequences; a rethinking of the placement culture that ranks students and companies alike in ways that amplify anxiety; and, more broadly, a cultural shift within these institutions toward treating failure and struggle as normal parts of student life rather than as sources of shame.

Without such changes, mental health advocates warn, Wakode's death will not be the last of its kind. Each tragedy prompts renewed attention and expressions of institutional concern, but the underlying pressures, competitive, financial and caste-based, remain largely unaddressed, embedded in the very structures that make an IIT degree so prized in the first place.
