In Saxony-Anhalt, a state in eastern Germany once part of the Soviet-controlled German Democratic Republic, voters delivered a result on Sunday that political historians are already calling a watershed: the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) won 44.4% of the vote in state elections, according to exit polls, more than doubling its previous support and decisively outpacing Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democrats (CDU). The outcome puts the AfD on the threshold of becoming the first far-right party to lead a German state government since the fall of the Third Reich in 1945.

The scale of the victory, amid unusually high turnout, sent shockwaves through a political establishment that has spent eight decades constructing legal and cultural safeguards against the return of far-right rule. Whether the AfD can actually translate its electoral triumph into governing power remains an open question. The party has ruled out forming coalitions, and mainstream parties, including the CDU, the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens, have steadfastly refused to cooperate with it, adhering to what German politics calls the "firewall" (Brandmauer) against far-right participation in government.

A Symbol Heavy With History

The significance of the result cannot be separated from Germany's history. The country's postwar constitution, its party system and its political culture were built explicitly to prevent the kind of conditions that allowed Adolf Hitler's National Socialist German Workers' Party to seize control of the state in the early 1930s. Historians have long debated how inevitable Hitler's rise actually was. Some argue that by late 1932 the Weimar Republic's collapse was unavoidable; others point to signs of economic recovery and a decline in Nazi support in the November 1932 elections, when the party actually lost seats and roughly two million votes, as evidence that the catastrophe might have been averted.

What ultimately delivered power to Hitler was not simply popular support but elite political calculation: conservative politicians such as Franz von Papen believed they could control the Nazis by bringing them into government, and persuaded President Hindenburg to appoint Hitler chancellor in January 1933. Within weeks, that assumption proved catastrophically wrong. This history is precisely why the modern German political establishment, across party lines, has treated cooperation with the far right as a line that must never be crossed. The Saxony-Anhalt result tests that consensus more severely than any election since the country's reunification.

Merz's Coalition Under Pressure

For Chancellor Merz, the result is an unambiguous rebuke. The CDU has led Germany's government coalitions through much of the post-reunification era, from Helmut Kohl's stewardship of unification in 1990 through Angela Merkel's sixteen years in power. That legacy included navigating recurring economic strain: the costly modernization of eastern Germany after reunification, unemployment that topped four million in 2003, and the 2008 financial crash that plunged the country into recession. Each crisis fed cycles of voter disillusionment that reshaped German politics, from Gerhard Schröder's rise in 1998 to Merkel's ascension in 2005.

The AfD's dominance in Saxony-Anhalt suggests that economic anxiety and immigration concerns in the former East Germany, a region that has long lagged behind the west economically despite decades of investment, have curdled into support for a party that mainstream politicians consider a threat to democratic norms. Merz now faces the delicate task of holding together his coalition nationally while his party suffers historic defeats regionally, particularly in a part of the country still processing the legacy of communism, reunification's broken promises, and years of economic stagnation.

If the AfD does form a government in Saxony-Anhalt, that would make it the first regional government headed by a far-right party since the end of the Second World War.

What Happens Next

Even with a commanding vote share, the AfD's route to actually governing Saxony-Anhalt is far from assured. Because the party has isolated itself from coalition partners and other parties refuse to work with it, forming a functional government could prove difficult or even impossible under current arrangements, potentially leading to prolonged political deadlock, a minority government led by rivals, or new elections.

Still, the symbolic damage to Germany's postwar political consensus has already been done. A party widely regarded by mainstream politicians and many historians as a genuine successor to the exclusionary, nationalist currents that fed Nazism has now won a plurality large enough to claim a mandate to govern a German state. Whether the firewall holds in practice, or whether Saxony-Anhalt becomes the first crack in a wall built explicitly to prevent Germany's darkest history from repeating itself, will shape the country's politics for years to come.
