India has agreed to supply Nepal with 654 megawatts of electricity daily after glacial floods tore through the Himalayan nation's hydropower infrastructure, leaving it unable to meet basic energy demand. The emergency arrangement, announced this week, is one of the most significant instances of cross-border disaster response between the two countries in recent years and highlights how deeply intertwined South Asia's energy systems and climate risks have become.

The floods, triggered by the sudden release of water from glacial lakes high in the Himalayas, damaged multiple hydropower stations that Nepal depends on for the bulk of its electricity. Nepal generates nearly all of its power from hydroelectric dams fed by glacier-fed rivers, a system that has powered the country's development for decades but is also acutely exposed to the very forces of climate change now reshaping the mountains that sustain it.

A Lifeline Across the Border

The 654-megawatt supply arrangement will flow through existing cross-border transmission links that India and Nepal have built up over the past decade, part of a broader push to integrate South Asia's power grids. For Nepal, the imported electricity is not a luxury but a necessity: with domestic generation capacity suddenly diminished, hospitals, water systems, industry, and households risk prolonged blackouts without external support.

For India, the move continues a pattern of using energy exports as a tool of regional diplomacy. New Delhi has increasingly positioned itself as a first responder to crises in neighboring countries, whether through vaccine shipments, food aid, or, in this case, electricity. The gesture reinforces India's strategic interest in maintaining close ties with Kathmandu, a relationship that has at times been strained by border disputes and Nepal's deepening engagement with China.

Energy interdependence in the Himalayas is no longer just an economic convenience; it has become a matter of disaster resilience.

The Himalayas: A Landscape Still Being Made

The vulnerability exposed by this disaster is rooted in geology as much as engineering. The Himalayas are among the youngest mountain ranges on Earth, formed as the Indian tectonic plate drifted north and collided with Eurasia beginning tens of millions of years ago. According to geological accounts of the subcontinent's formation, India separated from the ancient supercontinent Gondwanaland roughly 40 million years ago and continued moving northward until it fused with the Eurasian landmass, a process that pushed the Himalayas skyward in several distinct phases. The most recent uplift occurred as recently as the Pleistocene epoch, meaning the range is, geologically speaking, still settling into its final form.

That youthfulness matters. Because the Himalayas are still rising and their rock formations remain unstable, the region is prone to landslides, earthquakes, and the sudden failure of glacial lakes, natural reservoirs of meltwater held back by loose walls of ice and debris. When these walls give way, often triggered by heavy rainfall, earthquakes, or simply the accumulated pressure of a warming climate, the resulting floods can move with tremendous force down narrow mountain valleys, destroying everything in their path, including dams and power stations built to harness the same glacial rivers.

Nepal and neighboring Himalayan regions have long depended on these glacier-fed river systems, not just for electricity but for irrigation and drinking water. Historically, the mountain passes and river valleys of the Himalayas served as corridors of trade and cultural exchange, linking the Indian subcontinent to Central and West Asia. Today those same geographic features that once enabled ancient trade routes now channel a growing climate hazard.

A Warning Sign for the Region

Scientists have warned for years that rising global temperatures are accelerating the melting of Himalayan glaciers, increasing both the number and the volatility of glacial lakes across Nepal, Bhutan, and northern India. As these lakes swell, the risk of what scientists call glacial lake outburst floods grows correspondingly, threatening downstream communities and the infrastructure they rely on.

This latest disaster in Nepal fits that pattern, and experts say it will not be the last. The country's heavy reliance on hydropower, while a source of clean and relatively cheap energy, leaves it structurally exposed to the same climate forces reshaping the glaciers above its dams. Diversifying energy sources and investing in flood-resilient infrastructure are likely to become more urgent priorities for Kathmandu in the coming years.

In the meantime, India's emergency power supply offers a short-term fix but also a preview of a future in which climate-driven disasters may increasingly require neighboring countries to lean on one another's infrastructure and goodwill. As glacial melt accelerates across the Himalayas, the electricity now flowing from India into Nepal may be remembered less as an isolated act of aid and more as an early example of how South Asia will need to adapt, together, to a warming and less predictable mountain landscape.
