Australia's electricity grid is undergoing one of the fastest storage-driven transformations of any developed economy, with new analysis showing that gas generation during the evening demand peak, the hours between 5pm and 8pm when household energy use spikes and solar power fades, has fallen by 67% over the past year alone.

The shift, detailed in analysis by consultancy EnergyEdge, marks a turning point in how the country keeps the lights on during its most strained hours. Batteries, both giant grid-scale installations and hundreds of thousands of household units, now supply nearly half of all dispatchable power during peak demand, displacing a fossil fuel that had long been considered indispensable for managing the evening crunch.

Why the Evening Peak Matters

For years, the early evening period has been the most technically demanding stretch for electricity grids worldwide. As the sun sets and rooftop and utility-scale solar output collapses, demand simultaneously climbs as households return home, switch on appliances, and begin cooking dinner. Historically, gas-fired power plants, capable of ramping up quickly, filled that gap.

Australia's experience shows that gap can now be filled by stored energy instead. Large-scale battery projects have continued to come online across the National Electricity Market, while a government subsidy scheme has helped push home battery installations to roughly 500,000 units nationwide. Together, these two forces have fundamentally altered the shape of the country's evening power supply.

A Case Study in Storage-Led Transition

The scale of the shift is notable because it did not rely on a single, centralized solution. Instead, it combined utility-scale batteries, which can discharge large amounts of power instantly to stabilise the grid, with a distributed fleet of home batteries that allow households to store solar power generated during the day and use it after dark.

This dual approach mirrors a broader pattern seen in other countries pursuing decarbonisation, but Australia's speed stands out. The country has long been an enthusiastic adopter of rooftop solar, giving it an unusually large base of distributed generation to pair with batteries. That combination, solar-rich rooftops feeding batteries that discharge during the peak, has effectively turned millions of homes into small power stations capable of smoothing out the grid's most volatile hours.

Batteries now meet almost half of the grid's dispatchable power needs during the hours of highest demand, according to the EnergyEdge analysis.

Reducing Fossil Fuel Dependence

The decline in gas reliance carries significance beyond simple fuel-switching. Gas peaking plants are typically among the most expensive and carbon-intensive sources of power on the grid, called into action precisely when demand, and therefore prices, are highest. Reducing dependence on gas during these hours lowers emissions and can help insulate consumers from price spikes tied to volatile gas markets.

It also reflects a broader test facing energy systems worldwide as they integrate higher shares of variable renewable generation. Solar and wind can supply abundant, cheap electricity for much of the day, but without storage, grids still need a reliable source of power during the hours when renewable output dips. Australia's experience suggests that batteries, not gas, may increasingly be that reliable source, a development with implications for how other countries structure their own transitions away from fossil fuels.

What Comes Next

The trend arrives as Australia continues to grapple with rising electricity demand from new sources, including data centres, even as it works to phase down fossil fuel generation. The rapid uptake of batteries suggests that storage technology, once seen as a niche complement to renewables, is now capable of taking on a central role in grid reliability.

Whether the pace of battery deployment can be sustained, and whether other countries can replicate Australia's combination of rooftop solar density and supportive subsidy policy, will shape how quickly the rest of the world can follow a similar path away from gas-fired peaking power.
