In Brasília, Flávio Bolsonaro's strong first-round performance in Brazil's presidential election has alarmed two distinct groups: democracy advocates who fear a return to authoritarian rule, and climate scientists who warn that the Amazon rainforest could lose years of environmental progress if he advances to power.

Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, has vowed to "re-democratise" Brazil, a phrase that critics say inverts historical reality. Brazil spent 21 years under military dictatorship before transitioning to democracy in the 1980s. His father has repeatedly praised the dictatorship, and his son's promise to "re-democratise" a country that functions as a democracy has prompted comparisons to authoritarian rhetoric that uses democratic language to justify anti-democratic ends.

Critics suggest the younger Bolsonaro could seek to continue his father's authoritarian project, pointing to the family's rapid consolidation of political power as evidence of a dynastic effort rather than a conventional electoral campaign.

A Dynasty in the Making

Flávio's ascent represents the continuation of Bolsonarismo in Brazilian politics. His father, barred from office amid legal troubles, has remained the movement's spiritual leader. His open admiration for the military regime that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985 has unsettled observers who lived through or studied that era's repression, censorship, and torture of political dissidents.

That history carries weight because Brazil's return to civilian rule in the 1980s was neither quick nor assured. The military government that seized power in a 1964 coup spent two decades banning political parties, censoring the press, and jailing trade unionists and leftist students. The country's democratic institutions, rebuilt slowly afterward, are precisely what critics fear could be at risk if Flávio Bolsonaro follows his father's documented nostalgia for authoritarian governance.

The stakes extend well beyond domestic politics. Brazil is Latin America's largest economy and a nation whose democratic stability has been held up as a hard-won achievement following the painful lessons of dictatorship.

The Amazon's Fate on the Ballot

For climate scientists and environmental campaigners worldwide, the election carries a second urgent dimension: the future of the Amazon rainforest, a globally critical carbon sink whose health affects weather patterns and climate stability far beyond Brazil's borders.

Under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil made measurable progress curbing Amazon deforestation after the surge in forest clearing during Jair Bolsonaro's presidency. Yet that environmental success has not translated into electoral momentum for Lula's political camp. Analysts have noted a disconnect between Lula's success in curbing deforestation and his performance at the polls.

The gap is significant. International observers, climate scientists, and environmental organizations have watched the Amazon's fate with mounting alarm, yet that concern appears to carry less weight with Brazilian voters than it does abroad. Should Flávio Bolsonaro win the runoff, campaigners warn the consequences could be severe. Environmental advocates describe a likely trajectory of increased deforestation, with risks of pushing the ecosystem toward what scientists call a "tipping point" beyond which recovery becomes difficult.

That warning is rooted in recent history. During Jair Bolsonaro's presidency, deforestation rates in the Amazon climbed sharply as environmental protections were weakened and enforcement agencies were starved of resources. A second Bolsonaro presidency, campaigners fear, would not merely halt Lula's gains but actively reverse them, accelerating forest loss at a moment when global climate targets already appear increasingly difficult to achieve.

Why Lula's Gains Didn't Stick Politically

The puzzle confronting Lula's allies is why a genuine policy success, measurable reductions in deforestation, has not shielded his movement from Flávio Bolsonaro's first-round strength. Lula built his political career on lifting millions out of poverty during his earlier terms through programs like Bolsa Família and on positioning Brazil as a rising global economic power. His environmental record in this term was meant to be part of that legacy.

But voter priorities this cycle appear to have shifted toward economic anxiety, crime, and other immediate concerns that have proven more politically potent than long-term environmental stakes. That gap between what matters to international audiences watching the Amazon and what motivates voters inside Brazil has become one of the defining storylines of this election.

What Comes Next

With Flávio Bolsonaro holding a strong position heading toward a runoff, Brazil now faces a choice with consequences that will reverberate well beyond its borders. A victory for the Bolsonaro name would test whether the democratic institutions rebuilt after the dictatorship can withstand a leader whose family has openly admired the era those institutions were designed to prevent. It would also determine whether the Amazon's recent reprieve was a durable turning point or merely a four-year pause before renewed destruction.

For a country that spent two decades rebuilding civilian rule, and a rainforest that scientists warn is approaching an ecological tipping point, the outcome of Brazil's runoff election carries consequences that neither Brazilians nor the rest of the world can easily undo.
