Every few election cycles, an outside observer declares that Latin America has finally found its ideological north star, borrowed from somewhere else. In the 1950s it was Moscow. In the 2000s it was the "Pink Tide" of Chavez and Lula. Now, if you believe the framing coming out of Washington, it is Donald Trump, who claimed in September that all seven rightwing candidates he endorsed in the region since his second term began have won. Sunday's Brazilian election, pitting the leftist incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva against a far-right challenger whose father, a former president, was convicted of orchestrating a coup, is being sold as the next chapter in that story: a referendum on whether Trumpism travels.

It is a seductive narrative. It is also, I think, mostly wrong, or at least badly incomplete. Latin America does not need to import populism. It has been manufacturing its own, in both right and left varieties, since before Washington existed as a political brand at all. Treating Brazil as a verdict on Trump's global coattails obscures a more uncomfortable and more durable truth: the region's politics run on a cycle that long predates any American president, and will keep spinning long after this one leaves office.

A Pattern Older Than the Pundits Admit

Consider Getulio Vargas, who seized Brazil's presidency in 1930 after the army toppled an ultra-conservative government. Vargas was no ideological purist. He was the first Brazilian leader to prioritize state-driven industrialization, building jobs in steel and electrical manufacturing, winning fierce loyalty from the working classes while terrifying the military and the old oligarchy. He ruled as an outright dictator from 1937, was pushed out in 1945, then returned by election in 1950, only to be hounded toward resignation again by the army in 1954. He killed himself rather than resign, declaring his death "a sacrifice on behalf of the Brazilian workers." That is not a man who needed a foreign patron to validate his populism. He built a cult of personality from entirely domestic material: land, labor, nationalism, and a genuine conviction that elites had rigged the system against ordinary people.

Vargas is the template, not the exception. Latin American populism, across a century, has reliably combined charismatic personalism, appeals to "the people" against "the elite," and a flexible relationship with democratic rules, regardless of whether the leader in question wears a red beret or a business suit. Juan Peron in Argentina, Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, and now a wave of rightwing figures from Javier Milei to Nayib Bukele all share this DNA far more than they share any coordinated ideological program dictated from abroad.

What's Actually New, and What Isn't

What is genuinely different this time is the explicit, personal branding exercise. Trump's claim that his endorsed candidates have gone seven-for-seven is a marketing device as much as a political analysis, an attempt to narrate a scattered set of national elections, each with its own domestic grievances over inflation, crime, and corruption, into a single triumphant global movement. Right-wing populism as a modern ideological category does indeed trade in exactly this kind of narrative: anti-elitism, economic nationalism, and the defense of a national identity against outside threats. The irony is that casting Latin American victories as proof of an American president's reach inverts the populist playbook's own logic, which insists that national sovereignty and resistance to outside interference are sacred.

This is where the U.S.-Latin America relationship's long, fraught history matters. From the Monroe Doctrine through Cold War interventions to the Iraq-era distraction that let Lula sidestep George W. Bush's Free Trade Area of the Americas entirely, the region has spent two centuries negotiating how much American influence it will tolerate before nationalist backlash sets in. Lula's own government, during his first run, deliberately diversified away from Washington, striking a trade deal with China that helped steady Brazil's economy and reducing dependence on any single foreign patron. He was rewarded with re-election in 2006. If Trump's endorsement becomes too visible a cudgel, it could just as easily galvanize the kind of nationalist resentment that has sunk American-aligned candidates before, rather than lifting them.

The Institutional Question Underneath the Ideological One

The more consequential question Sunday's vote raises isn't "is Trumpism winning," but "are the guardrails holding." Brazil's challenger carries the inheritance of a father convicted of attempting a coup, a fact that should worry anyone regardless of which bloc they root for. Democracies have survived populist waves before precisely when institutions proved sturdier than the strongmen testing them. Vargas was eventually reined in by the army twice. Chile, after the Pinochet dictatorship, found that classic neo-liberal economic policies were not sufficient on their own and had to blend market reform with real state intervention and social spending under Michelle Bachelet, nationalizing the copper giant Codelco while still operating within democratic constraints. Nicaragua's Violeta Chamorro, elected in 1990, proved that peaceful transfers of power were possible even after a decade of civil war, when Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas accepted defeat and let her serve her full term, disarming guerrilla factions in the process.

Those are the precedents that matter here, not whether a given candidate wears Trump's endorsement like a medal. Institutions bent but did not break in Brazil, Chile, and Nicaragua at various moments of populist pressure, right and left alike. Whether they bend or break in Brazil again this weekend has far more to do with the strength of its courts, its military's willingness to stay in the barracks, and its electorate's tolerance for a coup-adjacent inheritance than with anything happening in Washington.

There is also a sobering lesson in how badly outside observers have historically misjudged the coherence of movements they lump together. During the Cold War, Western analysts assumed international communism was a monolith directed from Moscow, when in fact the Sino-Soviet split had fractured it so badly that Vietnam and China, both nominally communist, went to actual war in February 1979 after Vietnam toppled the Chinese-backed Khmer Rouge. If ideological blocs that share an actual governing philosophy and military alliance structure could fracture that badly, a loosely connected set of rightwing Latin American electoral victories, each driven by distinct local grievances over crime, inflation, and corruption, is an even flimsier thing to call a unified "bloc."

What the Vote Actually Tells Us

None of this means Trump's endorsement is irrelevant. Soft power is real, and a sitting American president's explicit backing can shift money, media attention, and elite coordination within a race. But the deeper pattern, stretching from Vargas's industrial populism in the 1930s through Chile's post-Pinochet balancing act to Lula's own China pivot, suggests that Latin American voters respond overwhelmingly to domestic conditions: who controls land and capital, whether wages keep pace with prices, whether courts and generals can be trusted. Foreign branding is garnish, not the meal.

So watch Sunday's result for what it says about Brazilian democracy's resilience against a candidate whose own father tried to subvert it. Watch it for what it says about Lula's capacity to extend policies that helped cut poverty from 54 percent of the population in 1998 to 28 percent by 2008, a remarkable run that stalled when conditions soured after 2012. Do not watch it as a verdict on an American president's global reach, because that is a story written backwards, fitting a messy, century-old regional pattern into a tidy modern brand. Latin America was producing populists, of every ideological flavor, long before anyone in Washington learned to spell the word.
