China has reduced the number of combat troops stationed along its disputed Himalayan border with India, according to a 2025-26 defence ministry report, in the clearest indication yet that the two Asian giants are pulling back from the military confrontation that has defined their relationship since 2020.

The report states that China has positioned 10 combined arms brigades along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto border that separates Indian and Chinese territory in the absence of a mutually agreed boundary, while another 10 brigades remain in rear areas away from the frontier. The disclosure suggests a deliberate thinning of forward-deployed forces compared with the height of the standoff, when both sides massed tens of thousands of troops, tanks and artillery across the Ladakh region following deadly clashes in 2020.

From Confrontation to Cautious Calm

The redeployment comes against the backdrop of a slow but steady thaw in India-China relations. Ties between New Delhi and Beijing collapsed in June 2020 after a violent brawl in the Galwan Valley left 20 Indian soldiers and an unconfirmed number of Chinese troops dead, the deadliest confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in decades. What followed was an extended military standoff along multiple points of the 3,488-kilometer frontier, with both sides pouring in reinforcements, building infrastructure and digging in for what many feared could become a permanent state of low-grade hostility.

Since then, diplomatic and military negotiators from both countries have held dozens of rounds of talks aimed at disengagement. Troops have withdrawn from several friction points, including Galwan, Pangong Tso and Gogra-Hot Springs, though contentious areas such as Depsang and Demchok took years longer to resolve. The latest figures on brigade deployment suggest that this disengagement process has now translated into a broader recalibration of force posture rather than merely symbolic troop pullbacks at specific flashpoints.

Reading the Numbers

A combined arms brigade typically includes infantry, armor, artillery and support units, and can number several thousand soldiers. Maintaining 10 such brigades at the LAC, with an equal number held in reserve further back, indicates that China is not abandoning its posture on the border altogether. Rather, it appears to be shifting toward a more sustainable, rotational model of deployment rather than the emergency-footing concentration seen in 2020 and 2021.

This kind of adjustment often reflects a judgment by military planners that the immediate risk of conflict has diminished enough to justify redistributing resources, whether toward other strategic priorities, cost savings or simply reducing the wear on troops and equipment operating at extreme high-altitude conditions for years on end.

A Fraught History, A Fragile Present

India and China have never fully resolved their border, a legacy of colonial-era boundary lines and a brief but bruising war in 1962 that left lasting scars on the relationship. Unlike India's western border with Pakistan, where the Radcliffe Line at least offers a defined, if contested, partition, the LAC with China remains an ambiguous and frequently disputed demarcation, subject to differing interpretations that have periodically sparked standoffs long before 2020.

Yet history also offers examples of how quickly hostility between South Asian neighbors can give way to cooperation, and how easily it can snap back. India's own experience with Pakistan illustrates this volatility: in the late 1990s, then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee traveled to Lahore promising that "there is nothing in our bilateral relations that can ever be solved through violence," only for Pakistan-backed forces to move into Kargil within months, triggering another war. That precedent is a reminder that troop drawdowns and diplomatic goodwill, however encouraging, do not guarantee lasting peace.

What This Means for Regional Stability

For now, the reduced deployment offers a tentative opportunity. Lower troop concentrations reduce the chances of accidental clashes, of the kind that occurred at Galwan when soldiers armed with makeshift weapons fought in the dark without firearms, a restraint measure under longstanding bilateral agreements that nonetheless failed to prevent bloodshed. Fewer forces facing off at close quarters generally means fewer opportunities for miscalculation to spiral into confrontation.

The shift could also create space for economic and diplomatic normalization. Trade between India and China, though politically fraught, remains substantial, and businesses on both sides have long pushed for calmer relations to protect supply chains and investment. A sustained de-escalation could similarly open the door to resumed high-level exchanges, easier visa regimes, and eventually progress on the boundary talks that have stalled for years.

But risks remain. Beijing's decision to keep 10 brigades in immediate reserve suggests it is hedging against any reversal, and infrastructure build-up, including roads, airstrips and logistics hubs on both sides of the LAC, continues largely unabated even as frontline troop numbers ease. Analysts have long cautioned that reduced troop visibility does not necessarily equate to strategic trust, particularly given China's broader assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific and its deepening ties with Pakistan, India's other principal rival.

For India, the challenge will be to interpret this thinning of forces as an opening for engagement without lowering its own guard prematurely. As with the broader history of India-China relations, and indeed South Asia's fraught boundary disputes more generally, cautious optimism will likely be tempered by hard-won skepticism about how durable any thaw can prove to be.
