The move, announced by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi, marks one of the sharpest challenges yet to the legitimacy of the ruling establishment and signals a new, more combative phase in the standoff over the country's electoral rolls.

Kharge's demand is unambiguous: the dissolution of the Lok Sabha and several state assemblies, on the grounds that the governments currently in power were elected using voter rolls the opposition claims are tainted. The platform's name is a deliberate invocation of Mahatma Gandhi's method of nonviolent resistance against unjust authority, a historical reference intended to cast the campaign as a moral crusade rather than an ordinary partisan dispute.

What is driving the confrontation
