The death of a 20-year-old Dalit student at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has set off a wave of protests and renewed accusations that one of India's most prestigious engineering institutions has failed to root out caste discrimination on its campus. Sahil Wakode, a student at the Mumbai institute, died by suicide, and his peers are now demanding the resignation of the institute's director and a professor in its energy science department, whom they accuse of enabling a culture of casteism.

The case has quickly become a flashpoint in a long-running national conversation about whether India's elite technical institutions, built to be engines of meritocratic mobility, have instead become sites where caste hierarchies are quietly reproduced. Students at IIT Bombay have organized demonstrations on campus, circulating statements that link Wakode's death directly to what they describe as systemic bias against students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.

A Pattern, Not an Isolated Incident

Wakode's death is not the first of its kind at an Indian Institute of Technology. Over the past decade, multiple suicides by students from marginalized caste backgrounds at IITs and other centrally funded technical institutions have drawn public attention to the psychological toll of academic environments that critics say remain hostile to students admitted through India's constitutionally mandated reservation system.

That system, which reserves a percentage of seats in public educational institutions and government jobs for historically oppressed communities, was designed as an affirmative response to centuries of exclusion. Yet students admitted under reservation quotas frequently report being singled out, stereotyped as less capable, or subjected to social isolation by peers and, in some cases, faculty. Advocates say this dynamic, often described as an "informal" caste hierarchy operating beneath the surface of formally caste-blind institutions, can compound academic pressure into a mental health crisis.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of India's constitution and himself a member of a Scheduled Caste, argued decades before independence that true social equality could not be achieved without political power in the hands of the oppressed. "Nobody can remove your grievance as well as you can," he said, insisting that only a government "of the people, for the people and by the people" could dismantle caste-based injustice.

Roots of a Persistent Struggle

India's caste system, which historically confined roughly one-fifth of the Hindu population to the status of "untouchables," dictated where people could live, whom they could marry, what jobs they could hold, and even which wells they could draw water from. The nineteenth and early twentieth centuries saw a succession of reform movements, from the Brahmo Samaj to Gandhi's campaigns against untouchability, that sought to dismantle these restrictions. India's 1950 Constitution formally abolished untouchability and made its practice a punishable offense, while reservation policies were introduced to correct generations of exclusion from education and employment.

Yet as reformers of that era themselves acknowledged, legal abolition does not automatically dissolve social attitudes. Historian Bipin Chandra noted that the "struggle against the evils of the caste system" remained "an urgent task before the Indian people" even after independence, particularly because economic and educational uplift needed to accompany legal change. Seven decades later, students at IIT Bombay are effectively renewing that same argument: that formal non-discrimination policies mean little without institutional cultures that actively support students from marginalized backgrounds.

Demands for Accountability

Protesting students at IIT Bombay are calling for the resignation of both the institute's director and a named professor in the energy science department, whom they hold responsible for fostering an environment they say contributed to Wakode's death. Their demands echo a familiar set of institutional reforms sought by student groups after previous caste-related suicides at IITs: independent investigations into complaints of discrimination, stronger and more accessible mental health services tailored to the specific pressures faced by first-generation and reserved-category students, and disciplinary accountability for faculty accused of bias.

Mental health advocates note that students who enter elite institutions through reservation policies often face a compounding set of stresses: academic environments calibrated to students with stronger prior preparation, social exclusion from peer groups, and the added burden of being perceived, fairly or not, as having gained admission through quotas rather than merit alone. Counseling infrastructure at many technical institutions, critics argue, has not kept pace with these unique pressures, leaving vulnerable students without adequate support during crises.

Broader Implications

IIT Bombay is among the most selective and internationally recognized universities in India, and its handling of the controversy is likely to be closely watched by policymakers, civil rights groups, and other technical institutions across the country. The case raises pointed questions about whether India's flagship educational institutions, often held up domestically and internationally as symbols of the country's technological ambition, are doing enough to ensure that diversity in admissions translates into genuine equity on campus.

For now, the institute faces mounting pressure to respond publicly to the allegations and to the specific demands raised by protesting students. How it does so may shape not only the immediate aftermath of Wakode's death but also the broader national debate over caste, meritocracy, and mental health in India's most elite classrooms.
