Delhi Police on Saturday carried out one of the largest mass detention operations in the capital's recent history, detaining close to 7,000 people, including opposition leaders and multiple working journalists, during a demonstration against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

By 7:30 p.m., police had detained an estimated 7,000 individuals across multiple locations in the city, according to official figures. The scale of the operation, deployed against a demonstration that organizers had framed as a peaceful assertion of democratic rights, has triggered sharp criticism from opposition parties, press freedom groups, and civil liberties advocates. Critics argue that the crackdown raises serious questions about the boundaries of lawful policing ahead of expected scrutiny of the Election Commission's revision process.

Opposition Leaders Among the Detained

Among those detained were Mamata Banerjee, the sitting chief minister of West Bengal and a prominent opposition figure, and Arvind Kejriwal, the former Delhi chief minister whose Aam Aadmi Party has repeatedly clashed with central authorities over policing in the capital. Reports indicate that four former chief ministers were held, a detail that underscores the unusual reach of Saturday's operation, which extended well beyond rank-and-file demonstrators to senior opposition leadership.

The protest had been called by opposition groups to oppose the SIR, the Election Commission's ongoing exercise to revise voter rolls. Critics argue the process could disenfranchise voters, particularly in politically sensitive states, without adequate transparency or due process. Heavy security had been deployed across Delhi in anticipation of the demonstration, with police barricading multiple sites well before protesters began to gather.

Parallel Detention Operations

In a separate operation, police detained Abhijeet Dipke, identified as a leader of a protest effort known as the "cockroach movement," along with two others, even as hundreds of demonstrators continued to gather despite the heavy police presence. Limited public information is available about the movement's specific demands, but its involvement in Saturday's broader crackdown illustrates how expansive the day's policing operation had become.

Journalists Detained Despite Valid Press Credentials

A particularly contentious aspect of Saturday's events was the detention of journalists who were actively covering the protests. Multiple reporters from independent media outlets reported being placed on police buses and taken into custody despite showing valid press cards, a practice that contradicts Delhi Police's published guidelines for identifying and clearing accredited journalists at protest sites.

Several journalists were detained by Delhi police and central forces on Saturday despite showing their press cards.

Journalists' associations swiftly condemned the detentions as an assault on press freedom, arguing that the indiscriminate treatment of working reporters, irrespective of credentials, signals disregard for the media's constitutionally protected role in covering public dissent. The detentions have drawn particular concern because they occurred in full view of the police's own stated protocols, which explicitly call for journalists displaying press identification to be allowed to continue their work unimpeded.

Questions of Scale and Legality

The scale of Saturday's detentions, nearly 7,000 people in a single day, is among the largest in the capital's recent record of protest policing, and it raises legal questions. Indian law generally requires that any detention be grounded in specific, individualized cause, whether a breach of peace, an unlawful assembly, or another cognizable offense. Civil liberties advocates argue that mass, undifferentiated detentions of this magnitude, particularly when they sweep in elected officials, former heads of state governments, and accredited members of the press, strain the legal justification typically offered for crowd control.

The timing adds further weight to these concerns. The protest was directed specifically at the Election Commission's SIR process, a mechanism that determines voter eligibility. Opposition parties have repeatedly challenged the rollout as opaque and prone to error. A crackdown of this scale against a demonstration aimed at electoral oversight is likely to draw heightened scrutiny from courts and rights bodies over whether the state's response was proportionate or whether it has chilled protest explicitly concerned with safeguarding democratic participation.

As of Saturday evening, authorities had not detailed the specific charges, if any, under which the nearly 7,000 detainees were being held, nor clarified a timeline for their release. The absence of that information, paired with the breadth of who was swept up, has left opposition parties and media bodies demanding an urgent public accounting of the operation's legal basis.
