Police in New Delhi have opened an investigation after three women journalists alleged they were sexually harassed by officers while covering protests demanding the resignation of India's chief election commissioner, an incident that has reignited concerns about the safety of women reporters working in the field and the accountability of the security forces meant to keep order at public demonstrations.

The women, all accredited journalists on assignment, said the harassment occurred as police moved to manage crowds at the protest site. Details of the specific conduct alleged have not been fully disclosed, but the complaints were serious enough that senior police officials ordered an inquiry into the officers' behavior, according to reports of the incident. The Delhi Police have not named the officers involved or indicated what disciplinary measures, if any, might follow.

A Protest Over Electoral Integrity

The underlying demonstration centered on demands for the resignation of India's election chief, part of a broader wave of public frustration over the conduct and independence of the Election Commission of India, the constitutional body responsible for overseeing the country's elections. Such protests have become flashpoints in recent years as opposition parties and civil society groups have questioned the commission's impartiality, particularly around voter roll accuracy and the scheduling and conduct of state and national elections.

It was into this charged atmosphere that journalists were dispatched to document the demonstration, a routine assignment for reporters covering Indian politics. That routine coverage instead became the scene of alleged misconduct by the very officers deployed to maintain order, a juxtaposition that has drawn sharp criticism from press freedom advocates.

A Recurring Pattern for Women in Indian Journalism

The allegations fit into a longer pattern documented by press freedom organizations and journalist unions in India, where women reporters covering protests, political rallies, and communal unrest have repeatedly described harassment, groping, and intimidation, often with little recourse. Unlike physical assaults on cameras or press credentials, which tend to draw swift institutional condemnation, allegations of sexual harassment by police officers are frequently met with silence, denial, or prolonged inquiries that produce no public findings.

Journalist advocacy groups in India have long argued that the chain of accountability breaks down precisely in cases like this one, where the alleged perpetrators are themselves law enforcement officers. Complaints lodged against police by civilians, and especially by women, can face internal resistance within police departments, which investigate their own personnel and are not always transparent about outcomes. The fact that Delhi Police ordered a probe at all signals the seriousness with which the allegations were treated, at least initially, though it remains to be seen whether the inquiry will result in accountability or quietly dissipate.

Advocates for press freedom say that unless investigations into police misconduct are conducted independently and their findings made public, the pattern of harassment facing women journalists at protests is unlikely to change.

Press Safety as a Broader Concern

India has consistently ranked poorly in global press freedom indices, with watchdog groups citing violence against journalists, legal harassment, and a climate of intimidation around reporting on sensitive political subjects. Women journalists in particular have described a double burden: facing the same risks as their male colleagues while covering unrest, alongside the additional threat of gender-based harassment, sometimes at the hands of the security personnel assigned to the scene.

The incident at the election chief protest arrives amid continued debate in India over the Election Commission's credibility and the government's handling of electoral administration, issues that have drawn large crowds and heavy police deployment in the capital in recent months. As those protests continue, journalists, particularly women, are expected to remain on the front lines of coverage, making the resolution of this case a closely watched test of whether Delhi's police force will hold its own officers accountable.

For now, the department's investigation is ongoing, and no findings have been made public. Press freedom advocates and journalist unions are likely to press for transparency in the process, arguing that the credibility of the inquiry, and of the police force itself, depends on a clear and public accounting of what happened.
