Speaking at an event hosted by The Hindu, former CEC S.Y. Quraishi joined opposition leaders in raising alarm over what they described as a coordinated effort linking the SIR with the long-delayed process of delimitation, the redrawing of constituency boundaries based on population data. Both processes, opposition figures argued, are being deployed in tandem to benefit the BJP ahead of future elections.

The SIR has emerged as a flashpoint because it directly determines who remains eligible to vote.
