Houthi forces in Yemen have seized the strategic Red Sea port of Mokha, marking the most serious escalation in fighting with the Saudi-backed government in years and bringing the Iran-aligned movement significantly closer to full control of Yemen's coastline and one of the world's most critical shipping corridors.

The capture of Mokha, part of a broader offensive to dominate the Red Sea coast, threatens to give Tehran and its regional proxies effective leverage over the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the narrow waterway at the southern mouth of the Red Sea through which a large share of global trade, including oil and container shipping bound for the Suez Canal, must pass. Combined with Iran's existing position near the Strait of Hormuz on the other side of the Arabian Peninsula, the advance raises the prospect of Iranian-aligned forces holding sway over two of the world's most consequential maritime chokepoints simultaneously.

A widening war

The fall of Mokha represents a marked intensification of a conflict that has simmered, with periods of relative calm, since the Houthis swept into Yemen's capital, Sanaa, more than a decade ago and prompted a Saudi-led military intervention on behalf of the internationally recognized government. Analysts and officials describe the offensive as the most serious wave of fighting between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed government in years, suggesting that a long, uneasy stalemate may be giving way to renewed, active war.

For Saudi Arabia and the United States, the strategic calculus is stark. Losing effective control of the Red Sea coast and its islands to a Houthi-Iranian axis would represent a significant strategic setback: it would hand Iran and its proxies leverage over shipping lanes vital to global energy markets and commercial trade, at a moment when Gulf security and Western maritime interests are already under strain.

Echoes of a longer regional pattern

The Houthi advance fits into a decades-long pattern in which conflicts in the Middle East have repeatedly drawn in outside powers precisely because of their implications for energy supplies and shipping. During the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s, attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf, including the mining of shipping lanes, drew American, British, French and Soviet warships into the region as Western governments moved to protect energy supplies from disruption. That war also exposed how conflicts rooted in local and religious rivalries could rapidly become internationalized once shipping and oil were at stake, a dynamic that historians have noted repeatedly in the region's affairs.

Yemen's own war has followed a similar logic. What began as a domestic power struggle between the Houthis, who follow a branch of Shia Islam and have received backing from Iran, and a Saudi-backed government has increasingly become a proxy contest with global stakes. Riyadh and Washington have long viewed Houthi control of Yemen's coast as a direct threat, not only to Saudi Arabia's southern border but to the safe passage of commercial and military vessels through one of the world's busiest waterways.

What comes next

The immediate consequences of the Mokha offensive are likely to include renewed pressure on shipping companies already wary of the Red Sea route after previous rounds of Houthi attacks on vessels, as well as fresh diplomatic urgency in Riyadh and Washington to check the group's advance. Saudi Arabia, which has sought in recent years to extricate itself from the costly Yemen war, may now face renewed pressure to re-engage militarily or diplomatically to prevent a full Houthi takeover of the coast.

For global markets, the risk is that instability along the Bab al-Mandab could compound existing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, effectively squeezing maritime trade from both ends of the Arabian Peninsula. Shipping firms and insurers have already shown a willingness to reroute vessels around the Cape of Good Hope in response to Houthi attacks in recent years, a costly detour that adds weeks to voyages and billions of dollars annually to global trade costs.

How Washington and Riyadh respond in the coming days is likely to determine whether the fall of Mokha becomes a turning point in Yemen's long civil war, or simply the latest escalation in a conflict that has repeatedly defied efforts to end it.
