Hundreds of women took to the streets of Delhi this week, chanting slogans and demanding accountability from authorities after a string of sexual assaults shook the Indian capital, according to a report from BBC correspondent Azadeh Moshiri. The demonstrations mark the latest eruption of public anger in a country that has repeatedly confronted, and repeatedly struggled to resolve, the question of women's safety in its cities.

Details of the individual assaults that triggered this week's protests remain limited, but the scale of the response signals how raw the issue remains for millions of women who say they still cannot move through public space without fear. Protesters gathered in visible numbers, a display meant to pressure the police and city administration into swifter action and more durable reform.

A Recurring Crisis

Delhi has long carried an uneasy reputation on this front. The city became the epicenter of a national reckoning in December 2012, when the fatal gang rape of a young woman on a moving bus sparked weeks of mass protests, led to changes in India's criminal laws, and forced political leaders to publicly confront a problem many had preferred to minimize. Fast-track courts were established, the definition of sexual offenses was broadened, and punishments were stiffened.

Yet more than a decade later, women in Delhi and other Indian cities continue to describe daily life as an exercise in risk management: avoiding certain streets after dark, tracking transportation routes, and adjusting routines around the threat of harassment or assault. That this week's protests were necessary at all suggests that legal reforms, however significant on paper, have not translated into a lasting sense of security on the ground.

Roots in a Longer Struggle

The demand for women's safety in India is inseparable from a much longer history of gender inequality that reformers have fought to dismantle since the 19th century. Social reform movements of that era, led by figures who challenged rigid customs and pressed for women's dignity, argued that no society could claim progress while half its population remained subordinated. Their advocacy helped seed the legal and constitutional protections that exist today, but reformers of that period also warned that changing the law was only a first step; changing entrenched social attitudes would take far longer.

Nobody can remove your grievance as well as you can, and you cannot remove these unless you get political power into your hands.

That sentiment, voiced by reformers fighting caste and gender oppression in an earlier era, echoes in the demands of today's protesters, who argue that real safety will come only when women themselves have a stronger voice in shaping policing, urban planning, and the justice system.

What Protesters Are Demanding

While the specifics of the current demonstrations are still emerging, protests of this kind in India have historically converged around a consistent set of demands:

Faster investigation and prosecution of sexual assault cases
Greater accountability for police response times and conduct
Improved street lighting, surveillance, and public transportation safety
Education and cultural campaigns aimed at shifting attitudes toward women

Women's rights advocates have long argued that legal reform without enforcement, and enforcement without cultural change, leaves the underlying problem largely intact. The recurrence of mass protests, nearly identical in tone and demand to those seen in 2012 and in the years since, underscores how difficult that combination has been to achieve.

A Test for Authorities

For Delhi's police and civic leaders, the protests represent a familiar but no less urgent test. Previous waves of public anger have produced promises of reform, task forces, and new helplines, yet activists say implementation has often lagged far behind the rhetoric. Whether this latest round of demonstrations produces concrete, lasting change, or simply another cycle of temporary attention followed by relative silence, will depend on how the government responds in the weeks ahead.

For now, the women marching through Delhi's streets are making a familiar demand with renewed urgency: that the city, and the country, treat their safety not as a periodic crisis to be managed, but as a fundamental right to be guaranteed.
