New Delhi has signaled it wants to repair its relationship with Bangladesh, even as a postponed visit by the new leadership in Dhaka underscores how deeply the fallout from Sheikh Hasina's ouster and subsequent flight to India continues to strain ties between the South Asian neighbours.

Bangladesh's chief adviser, Tarique Rahman, who has been steering the interim government since Hasina's departure last year, had planned a visit to India but has now put those plans on hold. Officials in both capitals have offered little public detail on the reasons, but the timing points squarely to the unresolved diplomatic irritant at the heart of the relationship: India's decision to grant refuge to Hasina after she fled Dhaka amid mass protests that ended her fifteen-year rule.

Despite the postponement, India has been careful to keep the door ajar. Officials have signaled that New Delhi views normalisation as achievable and desirable, framing the current friction as a manageable phase rather than a rupture. Dhaka, for its part, has struck a similar note, with officials describing a wish to "move towards a new relationship" with India. This language suggests both sides recognise the costs of prolonged estrangement even as they navigate the politically sensitive matter of Hasina's presence on Indian soil.

A Familiar Pattern of Friction and Repair

The current standoff is only the latest chapter in a relationship that has long oscillated between cooperation and mistrust, a pattern familiar across the subcontinent's post-Partition history. India's ties with Pakistan offer the starker example: decades of hostility interrupted by moments of genuine warmth, from the 1966 Tashkent Declaration after the 1965 war to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's 1999 bus journey to Lahore, where he declared that "there is nothing in our bilateral relations that can ever be solved through violence." That goodwill collapsed within months when Pakistani-backed forces moved into Kargil.

Bangladesh and India do not carry that same history of open warfare, but the underlying dynamic is comparable: political transitions in one country can upend carefully built relationships with the other. Hasina's government had cultivated close ties with New Delhi over more than a decade, making India's decision to shelter her after her fall a natural point of tension with whatever government succeeded her. For the interim leadership in Dhaka, which draws support from constituencies that opposed Hasina's rule, India's continued hosting of the former prime minister is a domestic political liability that complicates any rapid rapprochement.

Why Both Sides Have Reason to Compromise

Economic and strategic logic argues for both governments to find a way past the impasse. India and Bangladesh share deep trade links, extensive river systems, and a long, porous border whose management depends on functional diplomatic channels. Disruptions in the relationship carry real costs: stalled connectivity projects, friction over water-sharing arrangements, and security concerns along a frontier that has historically been vulnerable to smuggling and unrest.

There are broader parallels here to how India and Pakistan have managed trade even amid political estrangement. Despite decades of hostility, official trade between India and Pakistan reached an estimated $2.5 billion by 2010, with unofficial and re-routed trade reportedly pushing the real figure closer to $10 billion. That experience suggests that economic interdependence can survive, and sometimes soften, political disputes that seem intractable at the leadership level.

For Bangladesh's interim government, a durable relationship with India is difficult to avoid given the scale of cross-border trade, energy cooperation, and the shared management of rivers like the Ganges and Teesta, whose water-sharing arrangements remain sensitive. For India, Bangladesh represents a critical partner in regional connectivity plans linking the northeast to the Bay of Bengal, as well as a frontline state in managing security concerns along one of the world's longest and most porous borders.

The Unresolved Question of Hasina

At the center of the dispute is a question with no easy answer: what happens to Sheikh Hasina. New Delhi has not indicated any plan to hand her over or ask her to leave, a stance that mirrors India's historical caution about extraditing political figures whose fate is entangled with volatile domestic politics elsewhere in the region. Dhaka's interim authorities, meanwhile, face pressure from constituencies who blame Hasina for years of authoritarian rule and want her held accountable.

This tension echoes a broader regional pattern in which asylum, extradition, and accountability for former leaders become flashpoints between neighbouring states long after the political crisis that triggered them has passed. Rebuilding trust will likely require both sides to accept an uneasy compromise: Dhaka may need to shelve immediate demands regarding Hasina, while New Delhi will need to demonstrate through other gestures, trade facilitation, high-level visits, and cooperation on connectivity and security that it values a working relationship with the new Bangladesh.

Whether Tarique Rahman's postponed visit is rescheduled soon or lingers unresolved for months may serve as the clearest signal yet of whether both capitals can separate the politics of one individual from the broader architecture of a relationship neither side can afford to abandon.
