New Delhi this weekend is the stage for one of the most consequential diplomatic balancing acts India has attempted in years. Chinese President Xi Jinping is making a rare 24-hour visit to the Indian capital, Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to attend the BRICS summit hosted by India, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has arrived even as the bloc struggles to agree on a joint statement over the war in Iran. Together, the three threads reveal a country trying to manage rivals, partners and volatile regional disputes without being pulled decisively into any one camp.

A Cautious Thaw with Beijing

Xi's brief stopover in Delhi, confirmed by Beijing, is notable less for its length than for the fact that it is happening at all. Relations between India and China have been frozen in mutual suspicion since 2020, when a deadly clash between soldiers in the Ladakh region of the Himalayas killed troops on both sides and triggered the most serious military standoff along the disputed border in decades. Trade curbs, troop buildups and diplomatic frost followed.

Trade and the border are expected to top the agenda in the Modi-Xi meeting, according to reporting on the visit, as the two governments test whether the thaw that began with limited troop disengagements can be extended into broader cooperation. Analysts note that India has been wary of moving too quickly, given China's continued military presence near the frontier and New Delhi's deepening security partnerships with Washington. Yet a complete rupture with Beijing, India's largest trading partner in goods, would carry heavy economic costs of its own.

This is not the first time the two Asian giants have oscillated between confrontation and pragmatic engagement. During the Cold War, China and the Soviet Union split bitterly over ideology, while China's relationship with the United States swung from hostility during the Korean War era to the dramatic thaw of Nixon's 1972 visit and eventual normalization in 1979. Beijing's foreign policy has long shown a capacity to compartmentalize disputes when economic or strategic interests demand it, and India appears to be betting that a similar logic can apply to its own relationship with China, even as the border dispute remains unresolved.

Steering BRICS Away from an Anti-Western Turn

The Xi visit coincides with India's hosting of the BRICS summit, a gathering that has grown well beyond its original membership of Brazil, Russia, India and China. Since its first summit in 2008, the bloc has been dogged by a persistent question: is it a genuine platform for economic cooperation among rising powers, or a vehicle for challenging Western-led institutions? Early skeptics doubted the four original members had enough in common to sustain lasting cooperation, given their divergent economic models, from China's manufacturing dominance to India's services economy and Russia and Brazil's reliance on raw material exports.

That tension has only sharpened with expansion. With Putin and Xi both attending this year's summit, unlike the previous gathering, India faces the delicate task of hosting a bloc that includes a Russia isolated by Western sanctions and a China increasingly positioned as a rival to the United States, while India itself has invested heavily in strategic ties with Washington and other Western capitals. New Delhi's challenge is to keep BRICS focused on economic cooperation and institutional reform rather than letting it harden into an explicitly anti-Western bloc, a shift that could complicate India's own balancing between East and West.

Mediating the Iran-UAE Divide

Adding to the complexity is the arrival of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, whose visit lands squarely in the middle of an unusually difficult diplomatic tangle for India as BRICS chair. The bloc has so far failed to agree on a common statement addressing the war in Iran, exposing a rift between Iran and the United Arab Emirates, both BRICS members, that India is now attempting to bridge.

The failure to reach consensus underscores a structural weakness of the expanded BRICS: an ever-widening membership makes unified positions on volatile geopolitical crises harder to achieve, even as the bloc's ambitions to project collective influence grow. For India, chairing a summit in which member states cannot agree on a shared response to a live conflict is a reputational risk, one that requires quiet mediation alongside the more visible pageantry of hosting Xi and Putin.

A Test of Strategic Balance

Taken together, the Xi visit, the BRICS summit and the Pezeshkian trip illustrate the central dilemma of India's contemporary foreign policy: maintaining strategic autonomy while managing relationships that often pull in opposite directions. New Delhi must rebuild trust with a neighbor it fought a border clash with just a few years ago, prevent a bloc it now leads from being defined by Chinese and Russian interests, and mediate a Middle Eastern rift between two of that bloc's own members, all while preserving its own growing partnerships with Western democracies.

How India navigates this weekend's overlapping summits may offer an early signal of whether its long-standing strategy of non-alignment, updated for an era of great-power competition and fractured multilateralism, can still hold together an increasingly unwieldy set of global relationships.
