Mumbai, India: India's two benchmark equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty 50, slid further on Thursday, October 1, extending a weekly losing streak that is now the longest in 25 years. The Sensex dropped 1.64% and the Nifty fell 1.78% during intraday trading, deepening a rout that has wiped out billions of dollars in market value and unsettled a market long regarded as a bright spot among emerging economies.

The scale of the decline is notable not just for its size but for its duration. Indian markets have weathered sharp single-day shocks before, from pandemic crashes to election-result volatility, but sustained weekly losses of this length have not occurred in a generation. For a market that has spent much of the past decade delivering outsized returns and attracting record foreign inflows, the losing streak marks a sharp break from the pattern investors had come to expect.

What Is Driving the Sell-Off

While the available data confirms the scale of the decline, it does not spell out a single cause, and that is itself telling. Prolonged losing streaks of this kind are rarely the product of one shock. They typically reflect a convergence of pressures: elevated valuations built up over years of strong gains, foreign investors reallocating capital toward other markets or safer assets, and broader anxiety about growth, interest rates, and corporate earnings.

Indian equities have traded at a premium to many of their emerging-market peers for years, a premium that was justified during periods of strong earnings growth and domestic investor enthusiasm. When growth expectations wobble, even slightly, richly valued markets tend to correct more sharply than cheaper ones. A sustained pullback of the kind now underway often signals that investors are reassessing whether those premiums were ever fully warranted.

Foreign portfolio flows are also a likely factor. Global investors have periodically rotated out of Indian stocks when returns elsewhere, particularly in the United States or China, look more attractive, or when the US Federal Reserve's policy stance shifts in ways that make dollar assets relatively more appealing. Even modest shifts in foreign positioning can have an outsized effect on Indian indices, given how much of the market's recent rally has been fueled by overseas capital alongside a surge in retail participation.

Why It Matters Beyond the Trading Floor

For ordinary Indian households, the stakes extend well beyond Dalal Street. The past several years have seen a dramatic rise in retail investment in equities, with millions of first-time investors entering the market through mutual funds and systematic investment plans. A prolonged downturn tests the conviction of this new investor class in ways that previous downturns, which affected a narrower base of market participants, did not.

The sell-off also carries implications for India's broader economic narrative. The country has positioned itself as a primary beneficiary of global supply-chain diversification away from China, and its stock market's resilience has often been cited as evidence of that story's credibility. A sustained correction does not necessarily undercut India's long-term growth case, but it does suggest that investors are demanding more tangible proof, in the form of earnings growth, policy follow-through, and macroeconomic stability, before rewarding the market with the valuations it has enjoyed in recent years.

Markets rarely move in a straight line, and a quarter-century benchmark for a losing streak is a reminder that even the strongest growth stories are not immune to recalibration.

What Investors Will Watch Next

Analysts and fund managers will be watching several signals in the coming weeks to determine whether this is a temporary correction or the start of something more prolonged. These include corporate earnings reports for the latest quarter, commentary from the Reserve Bank of India on interest rates and liquidity, and the pace of foreign institutional investment flows. Any stabilization in these areas could help the market find a floor; continued deterioration could extend the losing streak further.

For now, the historic nature of the decline itself is the headline. A 25-year benchmark is not broken lightly, and its arrival serves as a signal that India's equity markets, after years of near-uninterrupted ascent, are entering a more uncertain and closely scrutinized phase.
