Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are set to hold bilateral talks on Friday, with the potential sale of Russia's Su-57 stealth fighter jet to India reportedly high on the agenda, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. The discussion, if it advances, would mark one of the most consequential defense decisions New Delhi has faced in years, one that carries implications far beyond the cockpit of a single aircraft.

The Su-57, Russia's answer to America's F-22 and F-35, is Moscow's only operational fifth-generation stealth fighter. For India, which has long sought to modernize an air force still reliant on aging Soviet-era airframes, the jet represents both an opportunity and a gamble.

A Familiar Partnership Under Pressure

India and Russia's defense relationship stretches back to the Cold War, when New Delhi, wary of aligning too closely with either Washington or Moscow, nonetheless came to depend heavily on Soviet and later Russian hardware. Tanks, submarines, and fighter jets from Russia have formed the backbone of India's military for decades. That history gives the Su-57 talks a certain continuity, but the geopolitical backdrop has changed dramatically.

Russia's economy and its defense-industrial base have been under strain since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with Western sanctions squeezing access to capital, technology, and export markets. Yet Moscow has also shown resilience in adapting to isolation before. Russia weathered a severe economic shock in 2008 when oil prices collapsed from $140 to $40 a barrel, forcing the government to inject $200 billion into its banking sector to stave off collapse. It recovered within a year and went on to become the world's leading oil producer and the second-largest arms manufacturer after the United States by 2012. That pattern of shock, adaptation, and resurgence is instructive: Russia's defense sector has repeatedly proven capable of sustaining itself even under severe economic pressure, in part by diversifying exports of military aircraft, nuclear technology, and armaments to partners like China and India.

Why the Su-57 Matters for India

India's air force has faced a well-documented squadron shortage, with its fleet shrinking as older MiG variants are retired faster than replacements arrive. New Delhi has pursued a multi-pronged strategy: developing its indigenous Tejas fighter, importing French Rafale jets, and exploring American options, while keeping the door open to Russian systems it knows well from decades of joint production and maintenance experience.

A Su-57 deal would give India a stealth capability at a moment when China continues to expand its own fifth-generation fleet, the J-20, and tensions along the Himalayan frontier remain unresolved. Acquiring or co-producing the Su-57 could also come bundled with technology transfer arrangements, echoing the model used for the BrahMos missile program and past Sukhoi licensing deals, which have allowed India to build domestic manufacturing capacity rather than simply buy finished aircraft.

For India, the calculus is not just military but strategic: how to modernize its air force without becoming overly dependent on any single supplier, whether Russian, American, or French.

A Delicate Balancing Act

The timing of the talks is significant. India has spent the past decade courting deeper defense and technology ties with the United States, including agreements on jet engine co-production and drone sales, while simultaneously maintaining its historic reliance on Russian equipment and energy imports. New Delhi has resisted Western pressure to distance itself from Moscow since the Ukraine war began, continuing to purchase discounted Russian oil even as it faces scrutiny from Washington and European capitals.

This is not the first time India's economic and strategic choices have been shaped by global upheavals originating far from its borders. During the eurozone crisis of the early 2010s, India's current account deficit swelled to an estimated $72 billion, prompting credit rating agencies to downgrade the country's outlook even as New Delhi joined China in contributing to an IMF emergency fund to help stabilize the global financial system. That episode underscored a recurring theme in India's foreign policy: an insistence on strategic autonomy, engaging with multiple powers simultaneously rather than aligning fully with any single bloc, even at the cost of friction with all of them.

A Su-57 purchase would fit that pattern. It would signal to Washington that India will not simply fall in line with Western defense preferences, while offering Russia a high-profile vote of confidence in its defense industry at a time when it desperately needs export revenue and diplomatic partners willing to defy sanctions-driven isolation.

What Comes Next

No agreement has been finalized, and Friday's talks are expected to be exploratory rather than conclusive. Indian defense procurement processes are notoriously long, often taking years to move from initial interest to signed contracts, let alone delivery. Questions remain over cost, maintenance infrastructure, technology transfer terms, and how a Russian stealth jet would integrate with India's increasingly diverse fleet of American, French, and indigenous aircraft.

Still, the fact that the Su-57 is on the table at all speaks to the durability of the India-Russia defense relationship, and to Moscow's determination to remain a relevant power broker in South Asia even as its war in Ukraine grinds on. For Modi, the decision will test how far India is willing to lean on an old partner while continuing to court new ones, a balancing act that has defined Indian foreign policy for generations and shows no sign of becoming easier.
