Israel launched a wave of airstrikes across southern Lebanon on Monday, killing 13 people, including women and children, according to Lebanon's health ministry. The bombardment shattered weeks of relative calm and marked one of the most significant escalations since a fragile ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah took hold.

Israeli officials said the strikes targeted Hezbollah infrastructure and personnel, framing the action as a response to what they described as ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement. Hezbollah has not yet issued a public response to the strikes, and it remains unclear whether the group will retaliate or hold its fire, a decision that could determine whether the truce survives.

A Truce Under Strain

The renewed violence underscores how tenuous the calm in southern Lebanon has been. For weeks, the region had experienced a lull that offered displaced civilians a rare chance to return to damaged homes and rebuild. Monday's strikes threaten to reverse that fragile progress and reignite fears of a broader conflict.

Israel has repeatedly asserted its right to strike Hezbollah targets even after the ceasefire, arguing that the group continues to rearm and reposition fighters in violation of the agreement. Hezbollah, for its part, has accused Israel of using alleged violations as a pretext to maintain military pressure on Lebanon and erode the group's capabilities gradually rather than through the kind of large-scale war seen in 2006 or during the more recent, intense confrontation that preceded the current ceasefire.

A History of Fragile Peace

Southern Lebanon has long been a flashpoint in the broader Israeli-Iranian rivalry. Hezbollah, founded in the 1980s with Iranian backing, positions itself as the primary armed force resisting Israel from Lebanese soil. The two sides have fought repeated wars and skirmishes, including a devastating month-long conflict in 2006 that killed more than a thousand Lebanese civilians and displaced roughly a million people, alongside significant Israeli military and civilian casualties.

That war ended in a United Nations-brokered ceasefire that neither side considered a clear victory. Hezbollah later acknowledged privately that the conflict had been a costly miscalculation, while Israel's military performance drew criticism for its disorganization. The lesson from that war, that neither side gains decisively from open conflict, has shaped the uneasy calculus underpinning the current truce.

Since then, Lebanon has cycled through periods of tense stability and violent flare-ups, often tied to the broader regional situation involving Iran, Syria, and Israel's conflict with Palestinian militant groups. Hezbollah has framed its actions as in solidarity with Palestinians, while critics, including some Lebanese factions, have long argued that the group and its Iranian patrons use the Israeli-Lebanese border as leverage in a wider geopolitical contest.

What Comes Next

The scale of Monday's casualties, and the fact that the dead included women and children, is likely to inflame tensions on the ground and complicate diplomatic efforts to preserve the ceasefire. Lebanon, already grappling with economic collapse and political paralysis, has limited capacity to absorb another round of destruction or displacement.

Analysts watching the region will be looking closely at Hezbollah's response, or lack thereof, in the coming days. A muted reaction could signal the group's desire to avoid a full-scale war it may be ill-equipped to sustain, while any retaliatory strikes risk a rapid escalation reminiscent of past conflicts.

For now, the ceasefire remains intact only in name. Whether it survives this latest test may depend less on formal diplomatic mechanisms than on the restraint, or lack of it, shown by both sides in the days ahead.
