Qualification rates for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2026, the gateway to India's prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), rose sharply this year, while women candidates recorded their highest success rate in six years, according to exam data released by India's testing authorities.

The qualification rate for SC candidates climbed to 50.16%, up from 40.41% in 2025, a jump of nearly 10 percentage points. ST candidates saw an even steeper relative improvement, with qualification rates rising to 42.14% from 33.99% the previous year. While exact figures for women candidates were not disclosed, officials confirmed their success rate was the highest recorded since 2020, continuing a gradual but consistent climb in female representation in one of the world's most competitive engineering entrance examinations.

A Long Road to Representation

The improvements arrive against the backdrop of a historically uneven playing field in Indian higher education, one with roots stretching back to the colonial era. As documented in Bipin Chandra's History of Modern India, British-era education policy was designed less to spread literacy broadly than to produce a narrow class of English-speaking intermediaries. Mass education was neglected so severely that Indian literacy rates barely moved between 1821 and 1921, and technical and scientific training was especially scarce: by 1857, India had only three medical colleges and a single engineering college, which admitted only Europeans and Eurasians.

Girls fared worse still. Colonial administrators saw little practical value in educating women, since they could not be employed in government service, and by 1921 only two in every hundred Indian women could read or write. These structural exclusions, by design or neglect, left deep imprints on who had access to technical and professional education long after independence.

Caste-based stratification compounded these gaps. Centuries of social organization under the varna system, as detailed in R.S. Sharma's India's Ancient Past, hardened over time into increasingly rigid and numerous sub-castes, often tied to land, occupation, and locality, with lower castes systematically denied property rights and social mobility. The cumulative effect of these historical patterns has been a persistent underrepresentation of SC, ST, and women candidates in elite technical institutions well into the modern era, prompting decades of affirmative action policy aimed at correcting the imbalance.

What the Numbers Suggest

Against that backdrop, this year's gains in JEE Advanced qualification rates are notable. A near 10-point rise in SC qualification and an 8-point rise among ST candidates in a single admission cycle is a significant shift for an exam known for its difficulty and low overall pass rates. Combined with the strongest women's performance in six years, the data points to a broader trend of improving access rather than an isolated anomaly.

Educators and policy analysts often attribute such gains to a mix of factors: expanded coaching infrastructure reaching smaller towns, targeted government scholarship and mentorship schemes for SC and ST students, increased outreach and scholarship support encouraging girls to pursue STEM fields, and incremental improvements in school-level STEM preparation in underserved regions. The reservation framework for SC and ST candidates in IIT admissions, a policy tool with constitutional backing, has also evolved over the years with supplementary coaching and relaxed qualifying criteria designed to help eligible candidates clear the exam rather than simply secure reserved seats.

The SC qualification rate rose to 50.16% this year from 40.41% in 2025, while that for the ST increased to 42.14% from 33.99%.

Why It Matters

The IITs remain among the most sought-after institutions in India, and admission through JEE Advanced is widely viewed as a decisive gateway to upward mobility. Improved qualification rates among historically disadvantaged groups do not by themselves guarantee proportional representation in final admissions, since seat allocation, counseling processes, and dropout rates after qualification all shape ultimate outcomes. But a rising qualification rate is an important leading indicator, suggesting that more candidates from these groups are clearing the academic bar required to compete, not merely benefiting from reserved seat categories.

Whether this year's gains reflect a durable structural shift or a one-time statistical bump will become clearer only with data from subsequent years. Still, for a country whose educational system was shaped for over a century by policies that sidelined mass literacy, technical training, and women's education, incremental progress of this kind carries weight well beyond the numbers themselves.
