That modest, almost quaint curiosity, chasing the molecular machinery that lets a single-celled organism swim toward sunlight, has now been crowned with the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for optogenetics, a technique that uses light-gated ion channels to switch individual neurons on and off with millisecond precision.

The Nobel committee's language was almost reverent: the method lets scientists "reveal the brain's mysteries" in ways previously thought impossible. That is not hyperbole. Before optogenetics, neuroscientists trying to understand which neurons caused which behaviors were essentially listening to an orchestra by randomly muting sections and seeing what changed in the music. Optogenetics handed them a baton. The United Nations, for all its structural weaknesses, including chronic underfunding and a Security Council veto that has repeatedly paralyzed timely action, nonetheless endures because it provides something no single nation can: a long-term forum whose value is cumulative rather than immediate. Basic science funding deserves the same patient logic. The 2026 Nobel in Medicine is not just a reward for three scientists. It is a receipt, decades late, for an investment nobody could have priced correctly in advance.
