Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a defiant address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, rejecting mounting international accusations that Israel's military campaign in Gaza constitutes genocide and calling the charge "the biggest lie of the century."

The speech, one of the most closely watched of this year's General Assembly session, came at a moment when Israel faces its sharpest diplomatic isolation in decades. In recent months, United Nations human rights investigators, genocide scholars, and a growing number of governments, including close Western allies, have concluded or suggested that Israel's conduct in Gaza meets the legal threshold for genocide. Netanyahu used his platform before the world body to reject that conclusion outright and to cast Israel instead as the victim of a coordinated propaganda campaign.

"This is the biggest lie of the century," Netanyahu told assembled delegates, according to accounts of the address, framing the genocide allegations as part of a broader effort to delegitimize Israel's right to defend itself following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks that triggered the war.

A combative tone toward critics

Netanyahu's remarks were notable not only for their substance but for their tone. He used the address to lash out at a range of critics, including New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, signaling that the prime minister views the fight over Gaza's narrative as extending well beyond the halls of the United Nations and into domestic American politics.

The prime minister also defended Israel's recent military strikes on Iran, describing the decision to attack as "one of the easiest decisions" of his tenure. The comment underscored Netanyahu's broader strategic posture: that Israel's willingness to strike preemptively against perceived existential threats, whether from Iran's nuclear and missile programs or from Hamas in Gaza, is non-negotiable regardless of international censure.

The weight of history

Netanyahu's appearance follows a pattern of Israeli leaders defending military campaigns in Gaza against accusations of disproportionate force, a dynamic with deep roots. During the 2008-2009 Gaza war, Israeli aerial bombardment and a subsequent ground invasion destroyed or disabled more than half of Gaza's hospitals, damaged dozens of primary healthcare facilities, and left roughly 50,000 Palestinians homeless, according to historical accounts of that conflict. More than 1,000 Palestinians were killed in that 22-day operation, compared with 13 Israelis. Amnesty International later confirmed Israel's use of white phosphorus munitions, which ignited fires that destroyed emergency food and medical supplies stored in a UN compound.

Even then, Israel justified its actions as necessary to protect its citizens from rocket fire, a rationale critics disputed at the time. Scholar Henry Siegman argued that Israel's 2008-2009 assault was less about stopping rockets than about preserving what he called the "strangulation" of Gaza's population through a blockade that continued for years afterward, drawing condemnation even from allies. In 2010, then British Prime Minister David Cameron warned that "Gaza cannot and must not be allowed to remain a prison camp," a comment Israel's embassy in London rejected, blaming Hamas rule for conditions in the territory.

That earlier war, and the blockade that followed, established a template that has recurred in each subsequent Gaza conflict: international alarm over civilian casualties and humanitarian collapse, met by Israeli insistence that military action is a matter of self-defense against an enemy that hides among civilians.

Isolation and defiance

What distinguishes the current moment is the scale and formality of the accusations now leveled against Israel. Where earlier wars drew condemnation largely through human rights reports and diplomatic rebukes, the current campaign has produced formal genocide allegations pursued through international legal bodies and endorsed by prominent scholars in the field. Netanyahu's decision to confront that charge head-on, and in the most emphatic terms available to him, at the world's premier diplomatic forum, reflects both the severity of the allegation and his government's calculation that outright denial, rather than qualified defense, is the most effective response.

The prime minister's willingness to simultaneously criticize a New York mayoral candidate suggests he views the battle over Gaza's legacy as a political and rhetorical contest to be waged on every available front, from the UN podium to American municipal politics. Whether that strategy quiets international criticism or deepens it remains to be seen, but Thursday's address left little doubt that Netanyahu intends to meet the genocide allegations not with concession but with confrontation.
