NEW DELHI: India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) has concluded that the deadly explosion at the Red Fort in the national capital was a deliberate act of terrorism, finding that the attacker, identified as Umar Un Nabi, detonated an explosive device hidden in his shoe. The finding rules out earlier theories that the blast, which killed 12 people and injured 29 others, may have resulted from an accidental detonation.

The attack, which investigators have linked to affiliates of Al-Qaeda, has emerged as one of the deadliest strikes on Indian soil at a site of profound historical and symbolic significance in recent years. The Red Fort, the Mughal-era monument in Old Delhi from which India's prime minister addresses the nation every Independence Day, has long stood as a target of interest for militant groups precisely because of its symbolic weight as a seat of state power.

A Deliberate Mechanism, Not an Accident

According to the NIA's investigation, forensic and technical evidence points conclusively to a shoe-triggered improvised explosive device (IED), a method that requires a specific, intentional action to activate. Investigators say this mechanism effectively eliminates the possibility that the explosion was the result of mishandling or an unintended detonation, a theory that had circulated in the immediate aftermath of the blast.

"The nature of the triggering mechanism itself demonstrates premeditation," an official familiar with the probe indicated, noting that shoe-based detonators are engineered specifically to be concealed and activated with deliberate physical pressure, a hallmark of suicide bombing techniques documented in militant attacks elsewhere in the world.

The toll of 12 dead and 29 injured underscores the scale of destruction caused by the device, and investigators are now working to trace the supply chain of materials used to construct it, as well as to map the broader network that may have facilitated the attack.

Al-Qaeda Affiliate Link

Investigators have attributed the attack to affiliates of Al-Qaeda, a finding that, if substantiated through further inquiry, would mark a significant development in the landscape of transnational terrorism affecting India. Security agencies have long monitored the resurgence of Al-Qaeda-linked modules across South Asia, particularly cells operating under regional branches that have sought to exploit local grievances to recruit and radicalize operatives.

The NIA, India's premier counter-terrorism investigative body, has taken over the probe given the case's implications for national security. Agencies are examining Umar Un Nabi's background, associates, travel history, and digital communications to establish the full scope of the conspiracy, including whether he acted as part of a larger cell or under direct instruction from handlers abroad.

Symbolism and Security Concerns

The choice of the Red Fort as a target is unlikely to be coincidental. The monument, built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the seventeenth century, has served as a potent symbol of political authority in India for centuries. It was here, in the Diwan-i-Khas, that British forces established military rule after crushing the 1857 rebellion, and it was in the Red Fort's precincts that the British later staged the controversial trials of Indian National Army officers, trials that themselves ignited mass public outrage and hastened the end of colonial rule.

That history lends the site an enduring symbolic charge, one that security analysts say makes it an attractive target for groups seeking to strike at the heart of Indian statehood rather than merely inflict casualties. The Independence Day address delivered annually from its ramparts by the sitting prime minister, broadcast nationwide, has made the fort synonymous with the image of a secure and sovereign Indian state, an image any attack there is calculated to puncture.

Security officials say the confirmation of a deliberate, shoe-triggered device shifts the investigation decisively toward tracing the network behind the attack, rather than examining questions of accidental mishandling.

In the wake of the attack, security around heritage and government sites in Delhi has been tightened, with additional screening measures reportedly introduced at other high-footfall monuments and public gathering points across the capital. The NIA is expected to file further details as the investigation progresses, including any charges against individuals suspected of aiding Umar Un Nabi in planning or executing the attack.

Officials have not yet disclosed whether any arrests have been made in connection with the wider conspiracy, but the agency's determination that the blast was a deliberate act of terror, rather than an accident, is likely to intensify pressure on security agencies to identify and dismantle any remaining elements of the network before further attacks can be planned.
