Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has declared that she will return to Bangladesh voluntarily and rejected any suggestion that her homecoming is linked to extradition proceedings, in an exclusive interview that lands amid escalating tension between New Delhi and Dhaka over her continued presence in India.

Hasina, who has been living in India since being ousted from power last year, said her decision to go back is not driven by a desire to reclaim office. "My return is not about power. It is about standing by the people," she said, adding that a "stable, democratic, secular and development-oriented Bangladesh" matters not just for her home country but for India's own security interests.

A Diplomatic Flashpoint

Hasina's presence in India has become one of the thorniest issues in the bilateral relationship since her government collapsed amid mass protests. The matter flared again after she held a virtual news conference from New Delhi on August 5, a move that drew sharp criticism from Bangladesh's interim administration, which has accused New Delhi of allowing her a public platform while formal requests for her extradition remain unresolved.

By insisting that her return will be on her own terms and unconnected to any extradition process, Hasina appears to be pushing back against the narrative that she is being compelled to face justice at home. The distinction matters greatly in Dhaka, where the interim government, formed in the aftermath of her ouster, has sought her return to face legal proceedings tied to the crackdown on last year's protests, which left hundreds dead and triggered the end of her fifteen-year rule.

Her comments also reflect an attempt to reframe her political standing at a moment when Bangladesh's fractured politics are being contested by multiple camps, including supporters of opposition figure Tarique Rahman, whose Bangladesh Nationalist Party has emerged as a central player in the post-Hasina landscape.

Why India Is Caught in the Middle

India's calculus has long rested on the view that a stable and secular Bangladesh serves its own strategic interests, given the two countries' shared border, deep economic ties, and shifting regional balance of power. New Delhi supported Hasina for years as a reliable partner who cracked down on cross-border militancy and anti-India insurgent groups operating from Bangladeshi soil.

Her ouster upended that arrangement and left India in an awkward position: sheltering a leader whom Bangladesh's interim government wants extradited, while trying to maintain working relations with the new administration in Dhaka. Hasina's public appearances from Indian soil, including her August news conference, have deepened Dhaka's frustration and raised questions in New Delhi about how long it can continue hosting her without further damaging ties.

A stable, democratic, secular and development-oriented Bangladesh is important not only for Bangladesh, but also for India's security, Hasina said.

Her framing, casting her potential return as an act of solidarity rather than political calculation, is likely to be read skeptically by her opponents in Bangladesh, who view her as attempting to rehabilitate her image from exile. But it also signals that Hasina does not intend to fade quietly from Bangladeshi politics, even as the interim government works to consolidate its authority ahead of eventual elections.

A History of Turbulent Transitions

Bangladesh's political history has long been marked by abrupt transfers of power, military interventions, and violent upheaval since its independence in 1971. Hasina's own Awami League has roots in the country's liberation movement, and her family's legacy, including the assassination of her father, the nation's founding leader, has shaped decades of the country's turbulent politics.

Her fall from power last year, following mass student-led protests, marked one of the most significant ruptures in that history, comparable in scale to earlier moments of popular uprising against entrenched rule in South Asia. How her eventual return unfolds, whether peacefully, in exile, or amid renewed legal confrontation, will shape not only Bangladesh's fragile democratic transition but also India's delicate balancing act in the region.

For now, Hasina's insistence that she is returning "on her own" leaves unresolved the central question hanging over Dhaka and New Delhi alike: whether her homecoming will ease the tension between the two countries or ignite a fresh political crisis.
