President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping struck a deliberately warm and cordial tone at a high-stakes summit at the White House, exchanging pleasantries and projecting an image of stability between the world's two largest economies. But beneath the carefully managed pageantry, diplomats and analysts say the meeting did little to resolve the deep and widening rifts between Washington and Beijing over artificial intelligence, trade and the future of Taiwan.

Expectations for major breakthroughs were low heading into the talks, and they appear to have been met accordingly. No sweeping trade truce was announced. No agreement on AI competition emerged. And the question of Taiwan, perhaps the most combustible issue in the relationship, remains as unresolved as ever.

Xi Invokes an Ancient Warning

At the outset of the meeting, Xi delivered what amounted to a philosophical framing for the entire US-China relationship, invoking the concept of the "Thucydides trap," a term drawn from the ancient Greek historian's account of the Peloponnesian War. The theory holds that when a rising power threatens to displace an established one, war often becomes difficult to avoid.

Xi called for "extensive cooperation" with Washington to steer the two superpowers away from that historical pattern and toward what he described as a path of mutual gain. It was a striking rhetorical move: an explicit acknowledgment, from the Chinese side, that the relationship carries genuine risk of military confrontation, paired with a proposal to manage that risk through engagement rather than confrontation.

Xi laid out terms for a mutual understanding that he said could steer the two competing superpowers away from future military conflict and onto a road of mutual gain.

The framing is not new to Chinese diplomacy. Xi has invoked the Thucydides trap in past encounters with American leaders as a way of signaling that Beijing does not seek war, even as it pursues an increasingly assertive posture on the global stage. But the timing, delivered amid what observers describe as a period of "intense competition" between the two countries, gave the reference added weight.

The Substance Behind the Smiles

The cordiality on display masked three areas of unresolved friction that have come to define the relationship in recent years.

Artificial intelligence has emerged as perhaps the most consequential new battleground. Both nations view dominance in AI as central to future economic and military power, and neither has shown willingness to slow its pursuit of advanced computing capabilities or to accept meaningful constraints that might benefit the other side.

Trade tensions, a legacy of tariff battles that have simmered for years, remain unresolved. Despite speculation ahead of the summit that the two leaders might announce some form of truce, no such agreement materialized. The underlying disputes over tariffs, technology export controls and market access appear largely intact.

Taiwan continues to loom as the most dangerous flashpoint. Beijing regards the self-governing island as a core sovereignty issue, and its military has in the past staged exercises in the waters between the mainland and Taiwan as displays of resolve. Washington's ambiguous but persistent support for Taipei remains a source of deep suspicion in Beijing, and nothing in the summit's public proceedings suggested either side has shifted its fundamental position.

A Long History of Wary Engagement

The choreography of cordial summitry between American and Chinese leaders has deep roots. Diplomatic relations between the two nations were reestablished only after decades of Cold War hostility, beginning with the surprise opening created by "ping-pong diplomacy" in 1971 and cemented by Richard Nixon's landmark visit to Beijing in 1972. Formal diplomatic recognition did not come until 1979, under President Carter, a move that generated significant domestic controversy in the United States at the time.

That relationship has cycled repeatedly between cooperation and confrontation ever since, weathering the shock of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown and periodic flare-ups over Taiwan, including Chinese naval exercises in the Taiwan Strait in 1996 timed to Taiwanese elections. Each era of tension has eventually given way to renewed engagement, driven by the economic interdependence that binds the two countries together even as strategic rivalry deepens.

Today's rivalry differs from the Cold War contest with the Soviet Union in a crucial respect: China is not an isolated command economy but a fully integrated participant in global trade and technology networks, making the stakes of any rupture, economic or military, far higher for both sides and for the world.

Whether Xi's invocation of the Thucydides trap reflects a genuine strategic recalibration in Beijing or simply a diplomatic gesture designed to soften the optics of an increasingly adversarial relationship remains to be seen. For now, the summit has produced warm handshakes and careful words, but little evidence that the fundamental sources of tension between Washington and Beijing have been resolved.
