Before the facts could be gathered, the verdicts arrived. An Omani co-pilot allegedly stabbed his pilot-in-command, Smit Machchhar, aboard a flydubai flight. Within hours, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the co-pilot had "undergone Islamic radical indoctrination." Former U.S. President Donald Trump went further, asserting the man had links to Iran and that "authorities" were "working on it." No tribunal has convened. No investigation has concluded. Yet a cockpit altercation has already been slotted into a pre-written script about terrorism, radicalization, and the Islamic Republic.

This is not analysis. It is pattern-matching, the geopolitical equivalent of seeing a face in a cloud because you were already looking for one. It is worth asking why serious political figures reach for this reflex so quickly, and what it costs us when they do.

A Rorschach Test With a Long History

The instinct to read ambiguous, chaotic events through the lens of one's existing adversaries is ancient. Consider how readily 18th-century observers in Bengal assumed conspiracy where there was often simple opportunism. In 1756-57, the English East India Company wove a literal "web of intrigue" at Fulta against Siraj-ud-Daulah, recruiting Mir Jafar, the banker Jagat Seth, the merchant Amichand, and others before Admiral Watson and Colonel Clive retook Calcutta. That was a genuine conspiracy, meticulously built. But it set a template: powerful actors learned that chaos could be narrated into existence, that a convenient story about betrayal and foreign hands could do work that evidence alone could not.

Fast forward two centuries and the pattern recurs with grim regularity, particularly around the Middle East. After the 1979 seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran, when Iranian students held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days, the region became a permanent backdrop against which almost any act of violence could be read as an extension of that rupture. The Ayatollah Khomeini's demands, including an American admission of guilt for pre-1979 interference, cemented a mutual suspicion that has never fully dissolved. Four decades on, the mere mention of "Iran" attached to any individual, however tenuously, activates a reflexive narrative apparatus built from that history.

The question is not whether Iran, or radicalization, or state malice ever factor into real events. They sometimes do. The question is whether political leaders are willing to say so before they know, simply because the story fits.

When States Themselves Blur the Line

There is a deeper irony here that deserves airing. The history of covert action shows that the actors quickest to allege terrorism are sometimes its authors. The March 1985 car bomb outside a Beirut mosque, timed to kill worshippers leaving Friday prayers, killed 80 people and wounded over 200. It was aimed at a suspected militant who escaped unharmed. It is now established that the CIA organized the attack with British intelligence assistance. If the very states most practiced at denouncing terrorism have, at times, been its perpetrators, then instant public accusation from political leaders should be read with more skepticism, not less.

This is not whataboutism. It is a reminder that the capacity to narrate an event, to assign it meaning and motive within minutes, is itself a form of power, and power is rarely neutral. When Netanyahu speaks of "radical indoctrination" or Trump speaks of Iranian links without any adjudicated evidence, they are not merely describing a crime. They are deploying a crisis to reinforce a pre-existing worldview, one in which Iran, political Islam, and terrorism are rhetorically fused regardless of the specific facts of an incident involving an Omani national on a Dubai-based airline.

The Cost of Getting Ahead of the Facts

Oman is not Iran. The two countries have historically maintained a careful, often constructive neutrality, with Muscat serving as a back-channel broker between Washington and Tehran for years, including during nuclear negotiations. To casually link an Omani citizen to Iran is not a small error; it collapses a deliberately cultivated diplomatic distinction that has served global stability. If the allegation proves baseless, as unverified claims launched in the first news cycle so often do, the damage to Oman's carefully maintained position, and to the co-pilot's family, cannot be undone by a quiet correction days later.

There is a useful contrast in how other technological disruptions were absorbed without immediate conspiratorial framing. When Charles Lindbergh made his solo transatlantic crossing in 1927, the world reacted with wonder rather than suspicion, and within three years 50,000 miles of air routes were carrying nearly half a million passengers annually. Aviation in that era was treated as a triumph to be extended, not immediately weaponized as a vector for political narrative. It is a reminder that how we choose to interpret a dramatic event involving airplanes, or anything else, is a choice, not an inevitability.

None of this means we should refuse to ask hard questions. If an investigation genuinely finds evidence of radicalization or foreign direction, that evidence deserves scrutiny and consequence. States have been guilty of exactly the kinds of violence alleged here before; the twentieth century offers no shortage of examples of governments, from apartheid South Africa to Pinochet's Chile to the Soviet state under Stalin, weaponizing individuals and movements. Terrorism, state-sponsored or otherwise, is real and deserves serious investigation wherever credible evidence leads.

What Responsible Leadership Looks Like

But there is a vast difference between investigation and instant accusation delivered by politicians with no judicial standing in the matter and, in Trump's case, no current executive office. Leaders who reach for the most inflammatory available narrative before the facts are in do real damage: to bilateral relationships, to the presumption of innocence, and to the public's capacity to distinguish evidence from assertion.

The flydubai incident may yet reveal something troubling. But the speed with which it was converted into a referendum on Iran and Islamic radicalization, days before any formal inquiry could report, tells us less about the co-pilot than about the political appetites of those doing the narrating. History suggests those appetites rarely wait for truth, and rarely apologize when truth arrives late.
