President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet in Washington next week for a summit that could determine the trajectory of the world's most consequential economic relationship, as a temporary truce on tariffs approaches its expiration date and both governments weigh the cost of letting it collapse.

The talks will center on trade, including the possibility of tariff relief worth tens of billions of dollars, alongside emerging flashpoints such as artificial intelligence policy. For both Washington and Beijing, the stakes extend well beyond bilateral commerce: global supply chains, stock markets and the pace of technological competition between the two superpowers all hang on whether the two leaders can strike a durable agreement or merely paper over their differences for a few more months.

A Truce Under Pressure

The current arrangement between the two countries has functioned as a ceasefire rather than a resolution, pausing escalation without addressing the underlying disputes over market access, industrial subsidies and technology transfers that have defined US-China relations for much of the past decade. With that truce now expiring, negotiators on both sides face pressure to produce something more permanent, or risk a return to the tit-for-tat tariff increases that rattled markets in recent years.

Reports indicate that one element under discussion is a deal potentially worth around $30 billion, though details of what such an agreement would cover remain closely guarded ahead of the summit. Analysts note that any package of this size would signal a genuine attempt by both governments to stabilize trade flows rather than simply delay confrontation.

Why Both Sides Need a Deal

The urgency on both sides reflects economic realities. China's export-driven growth model depends heavily on access to American consumers, while US businesses and farmers have absorbed significant costs from tariffs imposed during years of trade friction. Neither Washington nor Beijing appears eager to inflict further damage on economies still navigating post-pandemic adjustments and, in Washington's case, election-year political pressures.

The addition of artificial intelligence to the agenda marks a notable shift. Where past summits focused narrowly on tariffs, quotas and currency practices, the inclusion of AI policy underscores how the US-China rivalry has expanded into strategic technology domains that both governments consider vital to national security and long-term economic competitiveness.

Echoes of a Complicated History

The Washington summit arrives against the backdrop of a relationship that has swung between engagement and confrontation for more than half a century. Diplomatic ties between the two nations, formally established in 1979 after years of Cold War-era hostility, were built on the premise that economic interdependence would temper political friction. That premise has been tested repeatedly, from the shock of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, which drew global condemnation, to the naval tensions of 1996 over Taiwan.

In recent years, disputes over trade imbalances, intellectual property and technology have replaced Cold War ideology as the primary source of friction. Yet the basic calculation that drove détente in the late twentieth century, that both countries have more to gain from cooperation than confrontation, still appears to shape the approach of leaders on both sides heading into next week's talks.

What Markets Are Watching

Investors and business leaders across the globe are likely to parse every detail of the summit for signs of whether the two governments intend to de-escalate or dig in. A credible extension of the trade truce, paired with concrete tariff relief, could provide a lift to markets unsettled by months of uncertainty. Conversely, a breakdown in talks, or the expiration of the truce without a replacement framework, could trigger renewed volatility in currencies, commodities and equities tied to global trade.

For now, officials in both capitals are signaling cautious optimism that a deal, even a partial one, is within reach. But given the complexity of the issues on the table, from tariffs to AI governance, few expect the summit to resolve every outstanding dispute. What happens in Washington next week may instead set the tone for how the two largest economies in the world manage their rivalry, and their interdependence, in the months ahead.
