A quarter century after hijacked airliners struck the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in rural Pennsylvania, Americans gathered Friday in New York City and communities across the nation to mark 25 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks, honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed and reaffirming a pledge that has echoed through every anniversary since: never forget.

At the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in Lower Manhattan, family members of victims read aloud the names of the dead, a solemn ritual that has anchored the anniversary since the first year after the attacks. Moments of silence were observed at the times each tower was struck and when the towers fell, along with the moment American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon and when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Similar ceremonies unfolded at the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, and at the Flight 93 National Memorial.

A Day That Reshaped a Generation

The attacks of September 11, 2001 remain the deadliest act of terrorism ever carried out on American soil. Nineteen hijackers affiliated with al-Qaeda, the militant network led by Osama bin Laden, seized four commercial aircraft that morning. Two planes struck the twin towers of the World Trade Center, causing both 110-story structures to collapse within hours. A third slammed into the Pentagon, and a fourth, believed headed for the U.S. Capitol or the White House, crashed in a Pennsylvania field after passengers stormed the cockpit. In total, nearly 3,000 people were killed, including victims from more than ninety countries, along with hundreds of firefighters, police officers, and first responders who rushed into the burning towers.

For many Americans alive that day, the images remain seared into memory: the second plane banking into the South Tower live on television, the smoke over Manhattan, the collapse of the towers into rubble that would later be called Ground Zero. For a younger generation born after 2001, the anniversary now serves a different purpose: transmitting firsthand memory into historical understanding, ensuring that an event which defined their parents' or grandparents' era does not fade into abstraction.

The Security and Foreign Policy Legacy

The attacks set in motion consequences that extended far beyond that single morning. Within weeks, President George W. Bush declared what he called a war on terrorism, vowing to hunt down those responsible and to punish any government that harbored them. The United States, backed by NATO allies, invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 to topple the Taliban regime accused of sheltering al-Qaeda and bin Laden. A new government was installed in Kabul, but the war dragged on for two decades, becoming the longest conflict in American history before U.S. forces withdrew in 2021.

The Bush administration's rhetoric, including the declaration that nations were "either with us or against us" and the labeling of Iraq, Iran, and North Korea as an "axis of evil," reshaped global diplomacy and set the stage for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, where Saddam Hussein was overthrown and later captured. Both wars proved far costlier and more complicated than initially anticipated, and the difficulty of establishing stable governments in their wake continues to inform debates about American military intervention abroad.

Domestically, 9/11 transformed how Americans travel, how the government surveils potential threats, and how federal agencies are structured. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security, the establishment of the Transportation Security Administration, and sweeping new intelligence-sharing laws were all direct responses to the intelligence failures that allowed the attacks to occur. Airport security, once a minor inconvenience, became a permanent fixture of American life, and the balance between civil liberties and national security remains a live political debate a quarter century later.

Remembering the Individual Amid the Enormity

Even as historians and policymakers debate the war on terror's legacy, Friday's ceremonies centered on something more intimate: the individual lives lost. Firefighters who never came home. Office workers who called loved ones from stairwells. Passengers who fought back against hijackers thousands of feet above Pennsylvania farmland. The reading of names, a tradition observed annually at Ground Zero, gives voice to a scale of loss that can otherwise feel abstract.

Twenty-five years ago, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks. Today, Americans are honoring the lives lost and reflecting on the aftermath of that tragic day.

President Bush had framed the attacks as an assault not just on buildings but on a way of life, and the anniversary continues to draw political leaders, survivors, and ordinary citizens together in a rare moment of shared national reflection. In a country often divided along political lines, September 11 remains one of the few dates that commands near-universal recognition of collective grief.

As the 25th anniversary events conclude, the challenge for the country, as with every anniversary before it, is to hold both truths at once: that the attacks changed the course of American history in ways still being debated, and that behind every policy and every war lies the memory of nearly 3,000 people who went to work, boarded a flight, or reported for duty on an ordinary Tuesday morning and never returned home.
