Tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated sharply in recent days, with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warning it has prepared for a "long-term war" and still has strategic weapons it has not used, while former President Donald Trump told Fox News he was weighing options "if and when do I blow the entire nation up." The exchange marks one of the most alarming rhetorical escalations between the two adversaries in years, reviving fears of a slide back into open warfare in a region already strained by conflict.

The threats come against a backdrop of decades of hostility between the United States and Iran, punctuated by proxy battles, sanctions, and moments of near-direct confrontation. But the language emerging from both sides this week stands out even by the standards of a relationship defined by brinkmanship. The IRGC's warning suggests Tehran believes it retains significant undisclosed military capability, a claim designed as much to deter Washington as to reassure a domestic audience. Trump's comment, delivered in characteristically blunt terms, suggests a willingness to contemplate the kind of overwhelming force that would mark a fundamental departure from decades of calibrated pressure and limited strikes.

A Familiar Pattern, With Higher Stakes

The current standoff echoes a pattern of escalation and de-escalation that has defined US-Iran relations since Iran's 1979 revolution transformed the country into an Islamic republic under Ayatollah Khomeini. That upheaval reshaped the balance of power across the Middle East and set Iran on a collision course not only with the United States but with its Arab neighbors, most catastrophically in the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-88, a conflict that killed hundreds of thousands and drew in American, Soviet, British, and French naval power to protect oil shipments through the Persian Gulf.

That war ended in stalemate, but the ideological project it was meant to crush, Iran's export of revolutionary Shia governance, endured and evolved. Tehran built out a network of allied militias and political movements across the region, from Hezbollah in Lebanon to various armed factions in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, using them as instruments of influence and, when necessary, as a buffer against direct confrontation with the United States and Israel.

That strategy has periodically drawn Iran's proxies into open conflict, as when Hezbollah's cross-border raid in 2006 triggered a 34-day war with Israel that killed more than a thousand Lebanese civilians and left about a million people displaced, despite Hezbollah's own private acknowledgment that the war's costs vastly outweighed its benefits. The lesson those episodes offer is that miscalculation on either side tends to produce outcomes far more destructive than either party anticipated.

Why the Rhetoric Matters

Words alone do not start wars, but in a region primed for conflict, they can accelerate a slide toward one. Iran's suggestion that it has withheld "strategic weapons" is a calculated signal meant to complicate American and Israeli planning by introducing uncertainty about Tehran's true capabilities. Whether the claim reflects genuine reserves or is largely posturing, it raises the risk of miscalculation on both sides: American and Israeli planners may feel pressure to act preemptively against capabilities they cannot verify, while Iranian commanders may feel emboldened to test limits they believe are backed by hidden strength.

Trump's comment carries its own risks. Suggesting the destruction of "the entire nation" is a rhetorical maximalism that leaves little room for the kind of incremental, deterrence-based signaling that has generally characterized American strategy toward Iran, including under his own first administration, which relied on targeted sanctions and, in one notable instance, the killing of IRGC commander Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike rather than large-scale military action.

Regional Stakes

Any serious escalation would reverberate far beyond Iran's borders. Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Kuwait have long balanced wariness of Iranian influence with fear of the instability a full-scale war could unleash, a dynamic that shaped their cautious support for Iraq during the 1980s war with Iran. Today, those same states have far more to lose: integrated global energy markets, foreign investment tied to economic diversification plans, and a fragile web of diplomatic normalization efforts that a new war could unravel overnight.

Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of the world's oil transits, remains one of its most potent levers. Past episodes of tanker attacks and mining threats in the Gulf, particularly during the final years of the Iran-Iraq War, showed how quickly localized military pressure can threaten global energy supplies and draw in international naval forces.

For now, the exchange between Washington and Tehran remains rhetorical. But history suggests that in this particular relationship, words have a way of setting the terms for what comes next. Whether this latest escalation fades into the long list of threats and counter-threats that have never materialized into full conflict, or marks a genuine turning point, will depend heavily on decisions made in the coming weeks by leaders on both sides who have shown, at various points, both restraint and a willingness to court catastrophe.
