A conflict that began with Israeli strikes on Iran has escalated sharply in recent days, as the United States launched military action near the Strait of Hormuz, President Trump threatened further attacks on Tehran, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared explicitly that his government is working to overthrow Iran's leadership. The convergence of these three developments marks a dangerous turn in a confrontation that until recently had been largely confined to Israeli and Iranian forces.

Trump said Tuesday that the United States had launched "large and powerful" strikes on Iranian targets near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply passes. The president said the strikes were retaliation for an Iranian attack on Israel and were intended to deter further Iranian aggression. He followed that announcement by saying American forces had also destroyed an Iranian mine-laying rocket, and warned that the US military "sees everything" Iran does, a pointed signal that Washington is prepared to strike again if Tehran retaliates.

The timing of Netanyahu's statement, delivered the same week, adds a new and more explicit dimension to the conflict's stated aims. The Israeli prime minister said Wednesday that Israel is actively working to overthrow Iran's government, a declaration that moves beyond the military objective of degrading Iran's nuclear or missile capabilities and into the realm of explicit regime change. Previous rounds of hostility between Israel and Iran, including the shadow war fought through proxies and covert operations for more than a decade, had rarely been accompanied by such an open statement of intent from senior Israeli leadership.

A Familiar Pattern, Higher Stakes

The current crisis echoes, in some respects, a recurring dynamic in Middle Eastern conflicts: military escalation that outpaces the political calculations that triggered it. In 2006, Hezbollah's cross-border raid against Israeli soldiers, an operation the group's leadership believed would provoke a measured response, instead triggered a 34-day war that devastated southern Lebanon, killed more than a thousand civilians, and left even Hezbollah privately conceding that the retaliation it invited was far more punishing than anticipated. That war ended in a United Nations-brokered ceasefire, but not before it exposed the risks of underestimating an adversary's willingness to escalate.

The direct involvement of the United States now raises the stakes considerably beyond that precedent. Washington's strikes near the Strait of Hormuz place American forces in direct confrontation with Iran in one of the world's most sensitive chokepoints for global energy supplies. Any disruption to shipping through the strait, whether from further American action, Iranian retaliation, or accidental escalation, could send shockwaves through global oil markets far beyond the immediate region.

Trump's warning that the United States monitors "everything" Iran does suggests Washington anticipates further confrontation rather than a swift de-escalation. Combined with Netanyahu's stated goal of regime change, the rhetoric from both allied governments now points toward an open-ended campaign rather than a limited punitive strike.

Why Regime Change Talk Changes the Calculus

Explicit calls for regime change carry particular weight in a region where such declarations have historically preceded prolonged and costly conflicts. Iran's government, an Islamic republic since 1979 under the late Ayatollah Khomeini and his successors, has weathered eight years of war with Iraq in the 1980s, decades of international sanctions, and periodic covert operations against its nuclear and military infrastructure. A leadership that has proven resilient through such pressures may calculate that it has little to lose by escalating further, particularly if it concludes that its survival is already at stake.

That calculus is precisely what made the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War so devastating and prolonged: neither side believed it could afford to back down, and outside powers, wary of the war spilling into the wider Gulf, found themselves drawn in regardless, deploying naval forces to protect oil tankers threatened by mines. The current crisis carries echoes of that dynamic, with American warships again active in the Gulf region and the safety of maritime commerce again in question.

Whether the combination of American firepower and an explicit Israeli goal of toppling Tehran's government will deter Iran or provoke it into broader retaliation remains the central uncertainty hanging over the region.

For now, neither Washington nor Jerusalem has outlined what would constitute an end point to the current campaign. Trump's warnings of further strikes and Netanyahu's declared ambition to see Iran's government fall suggest a conflict without a clearly defined off-ramp, raising the question of how far the United States and Israel are prepared to go, and how Iran, along with its remaining regional allies, might respond if pushed further into a corner.
